SYD airport to Hyde Park area transfers

Frommers lists various public transport options including a bus from the terminals to various parts of downtown, though no stops are indicated, just the cost of $5AUD each way.

Then there is Air Link which will stop at a handful of stations but you need to transfer to other trains for other stations.

They also list a van service which goes direct to an address for $20AUD round-trip:

Is it easy to get to Hyde Park using either the bus or the Air Link? I would no expect it to be as easy as the shuttle but obviously cheaper and potentially faster since the shuttle is probably shared meaning other passengers could be dropped off before you.

$5? I am not aware of that one! A shuttle will normally cost around $14 each to my knowledge. When you say to Hyde Park, you can get the train from the airport to either Museum or St James Station depending on which part of Hyde Park you mean.It is something like $15 each and will be much quicker than the shuttle. If you tell us which hotel you are going to, we can give you more relevant information.

And if there are two or more, you're probably better off taking a taxi - about $40, direct to your hotel.

Hyde Park Inn

Here is what Frommers says about the bus and the Air Link:

Hmm, didn't notice the Air Link was $14AUD. Might as well take the round trip KST shuttle for $20AUD then, unless Air Link can get me within walking distance of the hotel.

Will be arriving Sunday morning so I wouldn't think traffic would be an issue.

Here is the KST link http://www.kst.com.au/Sydney/Airport...to-City-Sydney

NB: Website requests online booking to guarantee seats.

The $5 is only between International & domestic airports.

Hmm, in that case, it sounds like neither the bus nor the air link is going to be much cheaper (if at all) than the KST shuttle.

But the airport is only like 5 miles from the CBD?

Museum Station is directly opposite the Hyde Park Inn.

Thanks, good to know but it costs more than the KST shuttle.

If there is a lot of traffic, then Air Link will save time, I guess.

Does anyone know whether you pay KST when you board, in cash, or when you make the reservation? I didn't see any credit card information request on the reservation form, but maybe that comes later, after you put in your request.

Yes I did the request and then they sent me a PayPal link. Then after I paid, they sent me a ticket with a number but nothing to print out as far as I can tell.

May be a good idea to print out the email ticket anyways.

I bought round-trip so they confirm the time for the airport pickup but I have to call back to confirm the return trip time.

Curious about how much time it will take. Guess as they drop off other passengers, no way to know when they will drop you off. I'm hoping it will be quick because there is a free tour starting at City Hall about 2 hours after I land.

scrb11,

When you say they "sent" you a ticket with a number, do you mean email? How quickly did it come--minutes or days later? Is there a fee to use PayPal? I'm also staying at Hyde Park Inn and arriving next week!

What is the free tour starting at City Hall?

I sent the request, they responded in about a day and a half with a link to a Paypal link.

I paid at the Paypal link with a credit card for which they charged a bit higher exchange rate as well as $1 surcharge.

So a total of about $22 for round trip. KST charges 20.70 AUD which is about $19-20.

Then they sent me an email with all kinds of details (a lot of the stuff you put in, like your flight, hotel, time, name). I presume their driver will have my name but just to be safe I will print out the email. I have their Sydney number as well.

Here's the free tour, he works for tips probably:

http://www.imfree.com.au/

Found it at TripAdvisor. There are other paid tours listed there too.

When I arrived in Sydney (can't believe that I'm already here since the beginning of the year) I took one of the shuttles and it was absolutely no problem to pay in cash without having prebooked anything. It costed $14 and took about 20-30min to the city, but it all depends on the traffic. If you need to go to Hyde Park it will be easier and faster if you take the direct trainline to Museum station or St James Station, from there it is not far to your accommodation. It will cost you a little bit more but involves less stress and you don't have to squash in a little van...
