Swimming beaches

We will be in Sydney for 3 days in the middle of February - we would like to spend one day at a beach with calm water. Recommendations would be appreciated.

Bobbie,
There are many beaches in Sydney that have calm water, some are actual beaches and others are fenced areas of the harbour making tidal pools - my suggestions are all in the Eastern Suburbs and are Redleaf Pool, Neilsen Park and Camp Cove - all are most attractive and have nice park areas as well as the beach. Neilsen Park also has a very good cafe/restaurant.
Camp Cove is very close to Watsons Bay and could be reached on the ferry from the CBD.

Prue suggestions are all good but are "harbour" beaches. If you want to try a calm "ocean" beach, try Clovelly or Coogee (mostly calm). Both are patrolled and easily accessed by bus or car.

Hi, Bobbie!

How about Shelley Beach, near Manly? Actually, there are four main swimming areas, all very close together, at Manly, so you could have a look at all and see which one you liked out of: Shelley Beach, Fairy Bower, Manly Cove, and the main Manly Ocean Beach. And you will enjoy the trip over there -- by ferry across the harbour, past the Opera House and the Bridge -- far more than the public bus trips which are necessary to get to most of the others. The term "calm water" is a subjective one -- for instance, I wouldn't call Coogee Beach "calm" -- so I think it is definitely wiser to pick a good area with alternatives and let you decide after you've had a look. Manly is really unbeatable.
