staterooms on Paul Gaughin?

We are going on a 7 day cruise on the Paul Gaughin in June with class C staterooms. Does anyone know of particularly good (or bad) staterooms in that category for the ship?
There is one (767) on the back of the ship where room and balcony are larger but only a stall shower that looks intriguing, but in the airplane world farther forward is always our preference. This is our first cruise and we don't know anything about how to request or choose.

Is there a Seat Guru for cruiseboats?

Thanks for your help.

Cruisecritic dot com is a great web site to check. I would "almost" call them the seat guru for cruiseboats. There are so many people who post on cruisecitic that you will get lots of advice. You may even find someone who will be on your same sailing.
Have a great time. I saw the Gaugan in port in Tahiti. Would loved to have taken a cruise on her!

Hi. I actually just came back from the 7 day cruise on PG. For my personal opinion. I don't think it makes much difference. Maybe you can look to see what part of the ship would you like to be close to? For example, would you like to be close to the pool? the dinning area? the spa? etc etc. My room was close to the main reception area and travel excursion desk which I found very convinent.

I personally didn't enjoy this cruise too much. The service was good, but the food was quite bad. (bad choices of wines too) Some waiters are way too hyperactive and constantly in your face all the time. I was also the youngest (well i think at least relatively young) in the cruise. I'm in my late 20s..most ppl are middle aged or elderly. With a few couple in their 30s. I felt that it lacks of evening entertainment. The ship is so small, and you dont' really have places to walk around. We just kept going up and down and around the ship.

The interior decoration or quality of the ship is not as good as I have expected. I see water leaking everywhere.

Hopefully by the time you go in June, they would have fixed the problem?

Have fun. Overall French polynesia is a gorgeous place to stay. But next time when I decide to go visit, I would definately stay in a resort instead.

Thanks for the feedback--I hope that they fix these things before we leave in June, especially the food. We are going to celebrate my husband's 50th birthday, so it sounds like we are in a more similar age bracket though I was hoping the age range would be more diverse. I hope this was not a honeymoon trip for you--that is a hard time to be disappointed.

In terms of cabin, I think we care most about view and not too crowded. Were there any excursions that you took that you especially like.

We are spending 4 nights in Bora Bora at a resort after the cruise and 2 in Papeete before we leave (in Papeete at a Swiss B and B, very inexpensive and we are hoping quite international.

momo817: Interested in your feedback about the PG...We have done that ship twice, and always had a grand time..Yes, it is smaller, but we like that, and we both met a lot of younger people..spent most of the time with a much younger set..We liked everything about the boat, especially the 'one price', no tipping policy, that way you know the bottom number, and don't get hit, at the end of the cruise, with a gigantic 'tip' fee. As I recall, most everything was included, and while the staterooms are basic, they are larger than some (like the Princess and HA)..Different strokes, guess.

Sorry you didn't enjoy it.

Hi Cmstraf,

First of all, you're going on a top line ship. You will have an amazing time and great service as well as visiting beautiful islands. Don't worry about your stateroom location - on a ship this size it can't make that much difference. On a "real" cruise ship - I mean, like, 2000 passengers, yes, it can and it does. I never put clients
a) near an elevator (loud rowdy people coming back at 4AM, or various couples with kids having chats about the days' activities at 7AM) or b) under the dining room (setting up at 6AM for the days breakfast) and a host of other considerations.

Mom...you're actually the first person I've ever heard of who had a problem with either food or service on this cruise line / ship. Just taking a wild guess here - were you by any chance with your parents on this trip?

The reason I ask, is that either you were, or you had a bad travel agent who just went for a high end ticket and didn't really match you to the cruise line that would work the best for you. As another poster mentioned, I too, hope this wasn't your honeymoon!

As for entertainment, with their demographics, this isn't what this cruise line is all about, that's more "mass operated" lines such as Princess, NCL, RCCL, etc. The people who go on this cruise want upscale food, service and care more about personalized small tours, learning about the areas they'e visiting than hanging out in a bar, casino or seeing stage shows. They'd really just like to go out with a knowledgeable guide, learn stuff, come back, change for dinner, have a gourmet meal with wine, stroll around the deck, look at the moon, go back to their suite and work on their trip notes and go to bed.

Bottom line - the higher the cost of the cruise, the older the crowd. (repeat this 2x please).

Yes, that's right - the people who can afford to pay the big bucks of a higher end cruise will be retired, and/or well off, and be able to spend more time on longer voyages, or add extra time on pre/post cruise options.

You want the PAR TAY crowd - take a 3 or 4 day cruise out of LA and you'll find the tequilla drinkers!

Hope this is helpful!

Melodie, I am reassured by your response. We are leaving three months from today and as you can see, we are refreshing our limited French and into countdown. I'll contact either Islands in the Sun or PG about not being close to elevator or under restaurant.

Merci beaucoup and mauruuru.

Hi Cmstraf,

Glad I was able to reassure you so you can be assured and giddy with anticipation about your upcoming cruise!

On this ship, I don't think either the elevator or restaurant will be a factor. I'll save you some time - if you've made your reservation with Islands in the Sun, call them - they're your booking agent, and the cruise line won't change your stateroom (if necessary or even possible), they'll just refer you back to Islands.

Good for you on brushing up on your French and Polynesian!Have a wonderful time & let us know how things went when you come back!

Regards,

Melodie

Just wanted to thank whoever suggested cruisecritic. It's fun to have found another forum and I'm getting more and more excited about our trip (though still am not clear on what cabin to request. It sounds like it may not really matter but I am one of those people who writes down favorite hotel room numbers and looks at all the rooms to choose better for next time.

And also another thank you to you, Melodie. Each time I read your posts I smile--we want exactly what you describe PG offers. I am in contact with our travel agent (who books for my husband's company; our trip is in large part a travel award for DH having spent 15 years there) to see whether we should go through her or contact Islands in the Sun (who she booked through) directly. Thanks to your counsel though, I am now quite sure that whatever cabin we end up with will be fine.

Hi Cmstraf,
I did this cruise in 2006 and loved it. Melodie is right on target. This is not a monster ship by all means, but it is a 6-star! The food was excellent (back then anyway!) and the staff would bend over backwards for you.

We actually had a room at the back of the ship (it might just be 767! - ours was the one on the left when you look at the back of the ship). We really liked the location.

It's a wonderful cruise. Enjoy it!

I have never heard of a bad stateroom location on the PG, but I have usually gone for mid-ship since I an sensitive to motion. That being said, I was on deck 8 on my last trip, on open seas to and from the Marquesas and was fine.

As I'm sure you've seen over at CC, the reports coming back about the ship are very positive right now. I hope so, I want to go back some day (I've been there 4 times for a total of 42 nights on the ship, was first there in 2000.)
