Anyone know of a good rental house or apartment in Melbourne for a 2 to 3 month period in the January to March 2011 time period? We'd prefer 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms. We are 2 couples and 2 children.

you probably need to be more specific about area, location ie seaside or???? Melbourne stretches for at least 30 kms in all directions so that covers ahuge area

Thanks for the recommendations.

We like what we've heard about St. Kilda with its restaurants and trendy area. We like to walk to area restaurants and parks.

We saw a really cute house in Williamstown (on the internet) - however, it's 20-30 minutes from the tourist sights in Melbourne.

Our group includes my husband and I (in our 60s), our daughter and son-in-law (late 30s, early 40s), 4 1/2 year old grandson Chris and new baby boy due in late August, who will be about 4 months old when we go to Australia.

Williamstown is a great location and the tram system allows easy access to the city & other suburbs.

Probably more restaurants etc., in St. Kilda, but in terms of proximity to the city, it's only about 10 mins closer than Williamstown.

I would definately go for St Kilda in preference to Williamstown - although Willie is quite charming, and has a maritime feel to it. However there's no tram to Williamstown - it's train or bus. St Kilda can be very "tourist" in parts - lots of back packer places.

Think about St Kilda West, East St Kilda (the centre for Jewish culture in Melbourne), Middle Park, Albert Park, South Melbourne (where we live), Port Melbourne or South Yarra. All these suburbs are a tram ride from the centre of Melbourne. Docklands might work for you - that's walking distance to the centre of Melourne, but a bit sterile in cultural terms.

Thanks everyone. We're now considering the Carlton area. Is it a safe area to live (for 2 months) with small children? It certainly is close to restaurants, parks, museums, etc. Does anyone know of any rental properties in the Carlton area?

Carlton is good - it's safe, close to the city, good public transport. Melbourne University is in Carlton, so there is a vibrant social scene. We've walked the streets in Carlton late at night with no feeling of apprehension.

Parkville is next to Carlton, and would also be good.

The link above to Henry's House, looks like it meets your needs. The location is excellent. It is in Rathdowne Street, which has many facilities such as a libray, public swimming pool and gym, medical centre, pharmacy etc. There is bus transport straight to the city from the front door and it is two blocks to Lygon Street. Additionally Rathdowne Street has many restaurants and cafes

A good pub (the Kent) opposite Curtain Square which is a popular park with playground equipment.
I think that Henrys House is above a shop, I will have a look on my way home this evening

I went past Henrys House this evening. It is above Cafe Pinnochio which does breakfast and lunch. It does not open in the evening, so no noise from downstairs if you are sleeping. The shops adjacent also are not open at night, the particular block is pretty quiet.
I hope you are able to get it for your extended stay as it is extremely convenient to everything you would need. Also has the advantage of being in a mixed residential/shopping/eating area.
