melbourne

I have a spare weekend in Melbourne, am keen for some good walking day trips easy to reach from the CBD.

Take the Sandringham line train from Number 9 platform at Flinders Street and get out at Brighton Beach. Walk to the foreshore then walk along the coastal trail to Ricketts Point at Beaumaris. Have lunch or a cup of coffee at the kiosk and then retrace your steps to Sandringham Station for the return trip to the city. One of the great walks of Melbourne that very few people are aware of. Perfect for this time of the year. http://www.visitvictoria.com/display...E80C476A90000/

If you are interested in checking out the interesting shopping precincts of Melbourne, you could walk from the city centre to Brunswick Street in Fitzroy and check out Gertrude Street while you are there.

Both streets have plenty of cafes, interesting shops, bars etc.

Otherwise, you could do a walk along the Yarra River to South Yarra.

Or you could make your way to Port Melbourne, and walk along Beaconsfield Parade (the road that runs alongside the beach) until you reach St Kilda pier, and then head to Ackland St in St Kilda.

Downunder, thanks that looks like fun - getting out of the city without a major journey. How far from Brighton Beach to Rickets Point, approximately?

Markop thank you too. Shopping usually gets me grumpy unless I manage to find something that doesn't make be look short(er) and wide (r) - and that's a rare event.
But St Kilda could be good, I wonder if I'll remember anything from my last visit there, in 1971!

Brighton Beach to Ricketts Point should be about 90 mins, but you may want to stop and checkout the excellent cafes at Black Rock. The Clock Tower will tell you when you are there. It is a coastal walk all the way with great views in both directions.
