Lone Pine or Currumbin

We are arriving in the Brisbane/Runaway Bay area in less than a month for a 5 day stay before heading to Melbourne for a week and are torn between visiting the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary or the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. Which would you recommend? FYI I really don't care to hold a snake. We are most interested in holding koalas and petting and feeding the wallabies and roos.

Currumbin is more famed as a bird sanctuary and not sure what their Koala situation is, so if it's holding a Koala that is amongst your prime interests, I'd be going to Lone Pine.

If you just want to get up close and not do the holding and I'm not even sure what they do re peeing (maybe an apron or something or your luck is either in or out) there's a few places in Victoria where you can get quite close in natural settings or even spot them in the wild (a distanct neck craning exercise)as they stay up fairly high in the gums.

Hi M,

What is your mode of transport? Will you be relying on public transport?

I feel that both parks would have pretty similar offerings - maybe Currumbin a bit more in the bird department.

If you will be using public transport then Currumbin may be easier to get to. However, I have just checked both websites and Lone Pine has info there in regard to Gray Line which operates tours to Lone Pine from the Gold Coast. I'd suggest you check both out and make your decision on which is going to be the easiest to get to.

It's koala season here at the moment and there are koalas in the trees in the park just down the road from me. They are cute - that's for sure. In our previous house we would get quite a few koalas visit our yard - we had quite a few koala food trees - it was always lovely to have them visit.

I completely hear you re the snake situation - they literally make me ill just looking at them. No matter, I hope you enjoy our wonderful wild life and let us know if you need more help!

The Currumbin Sanctuary site does show they now have a range of animals including Koalas but nothing about handling and when you look at their showtime schedule, it near seems they are drifting towards a theme park set-up.

I lived on the GC a number of years and never went there mainly because I've found sanctuaries consisting of a lot of caged birds/animals have something of an odour you do not get when viewing them in more open conditions or in the wild - there was a report I remember a few years back on the sanctuary there having a sewerage disposal issue to be addressed,so I'm pleased I never bothered.

Lone Pine is claimed to be the largest Koala Sanctuary and from their site it seems to be the place you ought to head given your interests.

Again, haven't been for no need with backyard the bush.
