Kangaroo Island or Cleland Wildlife Park in Adelaide
Our tour includes Cleland Wildlife Park but we have an additional free day in Adelaide. Is it worth our time and expense to go to Kangaroo Island as opposed to other tour options there?

Our first trip to Kangaroo Island was a one day fly-in/fly out tour and we thought it was very much worth our time and money. We flew from Adelaide on a very early flight and returned from KI on an early evening flight. We were on an organized tour which took us to Seal Bay, Little Sahara, Kelly Hill Cave, the Remarkable Rocks, Admiral Arch and Flinders Chase NP. Our tour guide prepared an Aussie BBQ lunch after our cave tour. If you can find something similar, I would go for it. You would also have the option of renting a car and driving to these places, but I don't think you could cover all this on your own.

Philly- if you have the time I would vote for KI. If you google "KI day tours" you will see many options. As an example, Sealink (who run the ferries & the coaches to KI) have a (very full) day trip for 270AUD per person. Departs Adelaide 6.45am, returns 10.40pm. Coach from Adelaide to the ferry at Cape Jervis takes 1-1.5 hours, ferry trip approx. 45 minutes. You did not state when you are coming- my only real reservation is that the sea trip can be fairly rough in wet & windy weather. The itinerary is similar to what longhorn describes. If you wish to fly to KI, that is around 463AUD per person. And KI is wonderful.
