Just returned from Hong Kong and Singapore

I just returned from Singapore and wanted to let anyone what we did. We went to Arab Street and really enjoyed that many bargains as far a shorts t-shirts and silk materials also Bugis street area shopping was good there.
Dinner at Clarke Quay and Boat Quay, we found Clarke Quay restaurants more reasonable but Boat has a better view.
Jurong Bird Park is worth the trip. We spent 3 hrs there but didn't make it to Night Safari.
We also had an overpriced Drink at Raffles but that is still a must anyway and since we stayed at the Westin we had a drink at Compass Rose on the 70th floor of the Westin that was a less expensive Singapore Sling and the view is spectacular.
We took a day trip to Johur Bahru Malaysia, except for the Palace it was a waste of a day.
We never made it to Orchard Road for shopping but did most of our shopping in Chimes a shopping mall across from Raffles and the Westin I recommend a store in there "Peter Hoe's Evolution"
As fare as Hong Kong Fodors needs to update this information.
Bird market CLOSED
Sung Dynasty Village CLOSED
I did go to some restaurants and can give advice on 4 FODORS picks.
American Peking Restaurant 20 Lockhart Rd.
Very good.
Wu Kong Shanghai Restaurant in Kowloon.
Also very good
Delaney's Irish Pub in Wan Chai.
Very good.
Mad Dogs in Kowloon
Good for Happy hour.
We also went to see the Big Buddha on Lantau that was also good but the bus ride is a llittle scary.
We went to Sam's Tailor 92 Nathan Rd and were pleased with the suits and shirts I ckd with other tailors and found the quality here much better.
I did a lot of shopping at Stanley Market and some at the Night Market but no where to try anything on there.
Jade Market was fun but as advised not to buy anything expensive we just looked and that was fun there is also an open air veggie market next to Jade market worth walking thru.
All in all we enjoyed our trip I stayed at Marriott and can recommend that hotel. Ask for a Harbor view.
Also have a drink in Lobby of Regent Hotel for the view and have tea in the Pensula but dress up for both (no jeans or tennis shoes ) they kind of look down on you if you aren't dressed.
None of my restaunts picks are goo expensive but since I work for a major airline I did get a reduced rate at the Westin and Marriott.

I may have the opportunity to work in Hong Kong on a two year contract. What can you tell me about the climate, the food, transportation, the lifestyles, etc. Hope you can help.

I have been to Hong KOng 4 times. every time in March becuz I work for United Airlines and trvl standby that and Nov for me are the best times to get on a plane. The weather last wk was abt 65F and cloudy it rained 1 day and we had sun 1/2 day I heard that in the summer it is brutally hot and humid ( I live near WASH DC so I know hot and humid).
They have a very good MTR train system I would never drive there.

The food was really good. But not real cheap. I guess abt 25.00 USD pp but that is with beer and unless you hit happy hour beer is kind of expensive at some places. The big hotels really rip you off .In the Regent we paid 85.00 HKD for 1 beer that is about 10.50-11.00 USD but you are paying for the view And food at the big hotels is high we found places off Nathan Rd and in Wan Chai that were better prices.

TO RKUPCHELLA Hi i had a problem sending u email direct so I hope you see this.
Not a lot of historical things in Singapore like London and other places.
We went to Bird Park and Sentosa and spent the afternoons at the Westin Pool.
Raffles in nice and historical but not as nice as before they remodelled it in 1990. I was there in 1988 and it was different.
I f you have time you can fly to Kuala Lumpur that was much more interesting than Johur Bahru. hope this helps. KS

I wouldn't recommend eating anywhere at Boat or Clarke Quays. The view is nice though. You would do better at the East Coast Park seafood places. You can find a lot of Singapore information in my Singapore Journal web pages:
http://www.travel-library.com/asia/s...ath/index.html

As for Hong Kong, I've been there several times but not for many years. I will be going there next month so it was good to see some recent tips. When I return I'll write up my findings in the Singapore Journal.
