Itinerary Help - Graduating From High School
I have been to Australia and New Zealand twice, however, I would like to take my grandaugther as a graduation gift to Australia for 7 to 10 days. We of course will do some of the highlights - Sydney, Opera House, Blue Mts, Great Barrier Reef, the animals and of course the people --BUT I would appreciate any responses from people who have taken their 'teenagers' - young adults -- what did they really enjoyed? I plan on taking my grandaugher, her mother and me. Also, if anyone is aware of any tours that would specialize in young adults -- if you could post some information.
THANK YOU!

We lived in Australia when our kids were young and then returned twice with them when they were in high school. With only 7 - 10 days, you really won't have enough time to do more than one destination other than Sydney. I would definitely make that 2nd destination somewhere in Far North Queensland. (We always have stayed in Port Douglas). My teens' hands-down favorite thing to do in Australia was to snorkel at the GBR. We went out with several companies (we've been there a lot of times) and we always went at least one time on each trip with Wavelength. They are our favorite company because they are a snorkel-only boat and they don't take more than 30 people at a time. But, there are lots of choices, so if your granddaughter would like the do an intro dive, there are boats that do that. If your granddaughter would like to be on a fixed platform, there's a boat that does that too.
The other things that they liked to do in Port Douglas was to go to the Wildlife Habitat for "Breakfast with the Birds". (They also have "Lunch with the Lorikeets" if you are not early risers.) and going to Daintree National Park. My kids always insisted we stop at the Daintree Ice Cream Company for some of their exotic ice creams, e.g. wattle seed. Another fun activity for us was going to Mossman Gorge to hike and swim.
In Sydney, they always enjoyed taking the ferry to Taronga Park Zoo and going to The Rocks Market on the weekends.

Then I would try to build in some flexibility as the weather can be a large influence on enjoyment at that time of year. Sydney can be stinking hot and have bush fires and the north can be wet. It won't be windy on the reef unless there is a cyclone around. Neither event is likely to be long lived so you can swap your itinerary around if needed and you have that ability.
If it is hot and unpleasant around the Blue Mountains you might like to explore the area behind Cairns. Yes I know it is closer to the equator but it does not get the severe continental winds that most of southern Australia can be subjected to in summer. Again, these wind events usually only last a few days.
