Hobart Accomodations

My wife and I will be in Tasmania for 6 nights, next April.

We arrive Hobart at 20:50 on Day 1

We depart Hobart at 06:15 on Day 7

I hear everyone raving about Matilda's. Would it be too much to rent car and get to Matilda's on day1 since we don't get in until 20:50?

And since we're leaving so early on Day 7, I assume I should stay closer to Hobart on Night 6.

Just so you know our trip consists of 3 nights Hobart Area, 3 nights Freycinet area.

Thanks in advance,

Mark

Hello Phishears:
No you can get to Matilda's on arrival as the difference in time from the airport to Matilda's or to Hobart is only about 10 minutes that late at night. Same goes for your departure, you can get closer to the airport by staying in Richmond or Sorell but again that only makes it about 10 minutes in a time difference to the airport. Having said that you may like to stay in Richmond as it is a really lovely little convict village with unique and beautiful accommodation there.
Pam at Matilda's is most helpful with late arrivals and you can then sleep in the next morning to compensate. Everything would be waiting for you including some nice chocolates and port because retiring to bed. If you stay there ask for either the Blue Room or the Matilda suite as they are my favourites.
I had both a late arrival and an early departure the last time I stayed there and I saw about 10 cars on the early trip to the airport. If your car rental place is not open on departure you just drop your keys in the box. However if you are intending to spend the first 3 nights in the Hobart area then Matilda's would be my choice followed then by your trip to Freycinet and then I would stay at Richmond the last evening but get to Richmond earlier in the afternoon so you can look around before dinner.

Don't know if you've seen this place -the henry jones art hotel. I had friends who stayed at for their honeymoon in hobart and said it was wonderful - you might like to have a look at it as an option. http://www.thehenryjones.com/

Yes the Henry Jones is very nice but a three night stay is from $960 - $2295
which is a far cry from what Matilda's costs. If you can afford it then go for it.

10 minutes to Matildas is wishfull thinking or there are 2 matildas. Renelagh is at Huonville which I can do in 20 to 25 mins sitting on the 100k speed limit from Hobart. The airport is about 15/20 mins from the city. So a day time drive in good traffic and knowing the road - 45 mins. For you guys, in the dark (sunset 5.50pm)well over an hour.
Suggest you contact Matildas because I'm not certain they would be over enthusiastic about a 10pm arrival.
May be fine, but i'd check first.
And at the end - 6.15 departure, I'd rather stay in Hobart. Its only 15 mins to the airport at that time of day - 4 lane highway and 3 cars on it.

Or Richmond was also good advise as it is only 10 mins from the airport. 2 hours from Freycinet to Richmond so allow an afternoon to wander around this pretty little village. You won't find breakfast anywhere in Richmond at that time. Prospect House leave a continental set up in the dining room and you can go in anytime.

I can guarantee you that Matilda's will not mind a 10PM arrival - it comes with the territory so to speak.
I have to tell you taswegian ( about time someone from Tasmania got on this forum we have been doing your work for you for too long:0)
it took me 24 minutes from Matilda's to the airport one morning for one of those disgusting early flights but I would really suggest that unless you like to play with getting/not -getting a speeding ticket staying in Richmond would be a lovely choice for your last night. As for breakfast there at that early time - go to that wonderful bakery the afternoon you arrive and get something from there for breakfast - that way it won't matter. There will be something open at the airport tho'if you need something. If you are flying Qantas you will get breakfast - if its one of the other airlines you can buy breakfast on them.

definitely agree with Richmond for the last night. Also agree with speeding fine thing - they got me (camera) on the Huon highway just 2 days ago for heavens sake! Only a couple of K over so may not get a ticket,

Unsure how often I can get a chance to do this but will help out with Tas enquiries whenever i can.

When you get off the plane in Hobart you can pick up about 200 brochures on what to see and where to go and what to do when you are here. Why not just "wing" it and see what looks good when you are here BUT make sure that you go to the Saturday morning Salamanca markets.

On our last trip to Hobart, we stayed in a self contained apartment at a place called Bellierive (not sure of the spelling), but its situated across the Derwent River from Hobat, with easy road access, or a pedestrian ferry (lovely way to travel). If you like cricket, then the main oval for the major cricket matches is played in this suburb. The nicest thing about Bellierive, is that you look back over to Hobart, with Mt.Wellington rising behind the city. Possibly the best outlook of Hobart, is to see it from across the river.

Or from the top of Mt. Wellington!
