HELP!!!

Got the big 20th anniversary coming up in 1 year. We are torn between Kauai & Fiji. We are into great snorkeling & surfing, as well as anything/everything outdoors & local culture. Whats the best choice? Both seem excellent & priced about the same as to air/hotels/packages..... however, boat & land excursions in Kauai are so much more expensive than Fiji! I'm sure this is an unfair question, but which would you recommend? Th

Hi Alaina,
About the only thing missing in your wish list in Fiji would probably be surfing. Not that there isn't any..I think it's Taberua or Taverua Island that has some of the best there is, but it's an island that would be a destination if your only interest was surfing. I have been to the Hawaiian Islands 5 times and would choose Fiji in a heartbeat. Not that there is anything wrong with Hawaii. I think Fiji is probably like Hawaii was about 50 or 60 years ago. There is so much culture, the friendliest people you will ever meet, and it is so unspoiled. You will come back relaxed, happy and feel like you've been about as close to heaven as you can get. There are over 300 islands in Fiji...the locals joke about it and say it depends on if the tide is in or out as to just how many islands, but it's about 330. Another positive is the cost once you get there... it is so inexpensive. If you stay in the larger resorts you will pay more but the more traditional Fijian accommodation is quite inexpensive especially for food and drink. Try visiting Rob Kay's Fiji Guide website if you haven't already..he has a bulletin board that has loads of info on it. The Blue Lagoon Cruise is also something worth looking into, it's absolutely wonderful. Have fun whatever you decide, and congratulations for making the 20th.
Diane

I think I read somewhere that the State Dept. has issued a warning concerning travel to Fiji. You might want to check.

As far as I know, most, if not all, travel advisories have been lifted for Fiji in February. I was there in November when there was advisories and never felt unsafe.
Just checked US, UK and Canadian government websites and no warnings about travel to Fiji, other than mentioning the coup from a year ago.
Diane

Alaina- We are going to Fiji for our honeymoon in 1 month. My fiance surfs and we are staying at Hideaway for part of the time where there is a surf break right offshore. The rest of the time we will be at Malolo where we are hoping to take a boat to Wilkes Pass, near Tavarua (the island Diane was talking about). Check out http://bulafiji.com/web/surf/ for more info. I think surf season in Hawaii is winter only - we were on Oahu and Maui last June and there were no waves. I can let you know more about Fiji after we get back in mid-June.

I got married in September and went to Fiji. This was during the "coup" and we never, ever felt unsafe so I suggest going to Fiji. It is sssooo beautiful there. We are definately going back for our 5th anniversary We stayed at Namale (gorgous place) and then the Hideaway which was OK.....not as nice as Namale.
