Best Area for Accomodation

Hi, I would be relocating to Australia in May. This is the first time i would be travelling to Australia. Would like to know if Kirribilli would be an ideal place to stay...Was lookin at the Mclaren hotel at 25 McLaren Street... However was open to stayin at Mercure at 818-820 George Street since it is cheaper. Can you please suggest if North Sydney is a better place to live in than South Sydney. This would be for a short period till I find some accomodation on a long term basis

Kirribilli is a great place.

All depends a bit on where you plan to end up and what you're planning to do.

George st is more central, and public transport is better, cmost of the public transport radiates out from the CBD. Kirribilli is close to the city, but so are a lot of other more interesting suburbs. It depends what your interests are. If you going to stay in the inner city you could also think about: Surry Hills, Paddington, East Sydney, Newtown.

What's your budget? Do you walk regularly? Kirribilli is a bit "hilly" so you'd probably need to be quite fit to stay in this area. Susan7 is correct about George Street being so Central. It's a good choice but far busier than Kirribilli is. South Sydney has some issues in regards to public transport so I'd suggest you stay near a train line for simple and easy access to sights. Be aware that Petersham and Stanmore Stations do not have elevators. Newtown Station is currently being upgraded and there is a lovely place to stay here. Food choices are excellent in Newtown and surrounding suburbs. Good suburbs to find rental accommodation too. I have lived and worked in the Inner West for most of my life and it's a great place to begin your Sydney trip. Good luck!

Thanks margo, susan and lyndie. I have narrowed down on McLaren Hotel on McLaren Street for my intial stay till I find something long term. Wanted to know if both the North Sydney station and Milson Point Station have a good frequency of trains to Parramatta since we would be travelling up there quite often.

I don't use the trains very much so can't help you on frequency from the North Shore. Here's the City Rail information you can search for timetables and routes here:
