Australia

We are hoping to travel to Australia soon and would like to correspond with someone who currently lives there or knows an awful lot about the area. What preparations are currently underway for the Olympics and do many Australians plan to attend? Are the clothing fashions similar to the US? (We hate to stick out in a crowd.) Are the beaches similar to those in the US? What are the most predominant forms of wildlife in and around Sydney? Do the movies we see in America portray a realistic picture of Australia? (ie. Crocodil Dundee?)

Hello, I'm from Perth in Western Australia and have been to Sydney lots of times. There are many preparations underway for the olympics and you can tour the developments and gardens around the area. There are of course souvenirs on sale already. I would assume heaps of Australians will attend as does the population of any country that hosts the O.We bas eour fashions on US trends as you'll see in the younger people. We have reverse seasons though, eg Winter US/ Summer Australia. I'd like to think that our beaches are better. I've seen all of the West Coast of the US which is nice but our beaches really are beautiful. Loads of white sand and clean water. You can see wildlife in nature parks or out in the outback. Comparing Australia with Crocodile Dundee is a revolting thought. Sure maybe out in the far outback you'll find a few Crocodile Dundees but certainly not in the city. Our cities are large and very modern. We are very cosmopolitan with nearly every nation in the world represented here. Hence we have so many great choices of ethnic foods to eat. We have beautiful tropical fruits all year round which is a real treat. Hope this info helps you all. If you want to know more e-mail me or ask here at Fodors. Enjoy!lympics

Hi guys - good on you for doing some research before coming to the Land of Oz.
From what I've heard about the US you'll find that clothes and food are slightly more expensive here. Glen was right about fashion being similar, although Aussie women are less inclined to wear loads of makeup and to spend hours blow-drying their hair each day.
Try to make the trip to Brisbane to see the gorgeous beaches at the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast (about 12 hours drive or train from Sydney). You'd also be mad to go home without seeing some of our great national parks - in Queensland, see Mount Tamborine and Binna Burra, the Blue Mountains near Sydney or some of the beautiful wilderness in Tasmania.

Have a great stay.

I am an New Yorker living in Sydney for over a year now. A great city which any American would feel at home. Clothes, food, etc. are very similar. Beaches are accessible and beautiful. Most Aussies are relaxed and behave themselves - no loud radios, barbeques, screaming - much unlike the beaches I'm used to in and around NY. While you can buy everything you might want or need here most everything is more expensive - including clothes, sunblock, everything - so bring it with you.
