Australia Honeymoon in February

Hi Everyone,

We are coming to Australia for our honeymoon in February! We have done some research and saw that this is a bad time with rain/cyclones/stingers to visit north Queensland (Cairns)/Whitsundays etc. We are flying in and out of Sydney. We have 14 full days to enjoy your beautiful country!

We will be starting in Sydney (3 nights) and wondering where to go from here! We have thought about flying to the Sunshine Coast and then exploring some of the southern GBR and islands from there. I know weather is unpredictable but is weather usually better here than way up by Cairns in February? We have heard great things about Lady Musgrave Island/Lady Elliott Island, etc.

A potential itinerary I thought of today was:
Sydney 3 nights
Sunshine Coast with island excursions/snorkeling etc(or stay on islands?) - 5 nights
Melbourne- 4 nights
Return to Sydney - 2 nights

Anything thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! We have also thought a bit about Tasmania but don't know much about it!

Thanks so much!

February is the hottest month in Australia. I went to Cairns/GBR in May which was fine but February would just be too hot and humid.
Your itinerary looks great and a good mix of places. Sydney is a lovely sparkling city on the water and it will be hot but you can always go inside for some air con coolness. The Sunshine Coast is one of my favourite places in Australia. Noosa is a really beautiful beach - well all the beaches are lovely up there and the hinterland is worth exploring as well.
Lady Elliott Island would be a good choice. We have been to Airlie Beach but it was more for backpackers/surfies and we felt old there!
Australia is big. Adding in Tasmania would mean flying there and take up more time. Stick with NSW and Queensland.

I wouldn't bookend unless it's REALLY convenient. Either continue on from Sydney to ___ or fly into Sydney and home from ___. Melbourne has direct flights to LA so you can set up an open jaw itinerary.

Thank you for your responses! Tasmangirl - Any ideas for where to stay on sunshine coast? We would love a beach resort or something relaxing on the beach. Have you been to Lady Musgrave Island? We have heard good things as well! I will do some research on Noosa beach!!

Any other ideas would be much appreciated!!

There are lots of great places - we stayed a few nights for our honeymoon many years at Sheraton Noosa now it's the Sofitel. It was lovely there and I hope to go back there for a milestone birthday or wedding anniversary. It's right in the middle of Hastings Street so you can walk everywhere.
Another time we stayed at Noosa International but that was a long time ago. It's on top of a hill so a bit of a walk either up or down. We chose it for the swim up bar but we went in July and it was far too cold so I did not try it out! Noosa has quite strict laws about hotels and apartments - only 3 storeys allowed so it's not over powered by horrible high rise everywhere.
There's a Peppers Resort somewhere close as well. I've not stayed at that one but Peppers is a high quality chain of accommodation.
I have not been to Lady Musgrave but it looks great and a day trip there is a good idea. Any GBR experience will be awesome. It looks like you can only camp on LM which means buying/bringing all your gear which sounds a hassle so if you want to stay over LEI is the better choice.
Last year we stayed at Sailport Apartments in Mooloolaba as we went on the spur of the moment and there was no accommodation left in Noosa. This was peak season in January but it ended up a good choice. We would be swimming in the sea by 8.30 am as it was so warm. We live in NZ which does have good summers but the sea is definitely cooler here.
Have a lovely honeymoon

Have a think about the weather. Anywhere in Queensland in February will be hot and quite humid. Melbourne could be hot but it will be a dry heat. Sydney will be somewhere in between. If you don't like high humidity I'd stick to the more southern states, there is still heaps to see and do.

You could even think about driving from Sydney to Melbourne along the coast, there are beautiful beaches and lovely small towns along the way. It's a long way and you would need to allow enough time to enjoy it. (And fly out of Melbourne back home.)

You can fly Sydney to Maroochydore, Sunshine Coast usually good prices in February. From Coolum up to Noosa the beaches are beautiful and some great national parks (Noosa NP, Coolum NP, Buderim State Forest) with gentle walks or hills to climb with amazing views. (Mt Coolum, Mt Tinbeerwah, Emu Mountain)
Cotton tree/Maroochydore/ Alexandra Headlands have more shops & nightlife but pick of the beaches is Coolum and Peregian Beach. Both have great cafes and excellent restaurants. Noosa Good too but busier.
The hinterland (Maleny, Montville) has some beautiful accommodation for varying budgets and more scenic spots - amazing views over glasshouse mountains, Kondalilla Falls, Mapleton Falls)Heading north you could do. 4wd tour up the beach from Rainbow beach and go across on the ferry to Fraser Island.
