Hi Alan, thanks for the advice regarding staying close to the water with my husband and 2 teen girls.(although Sullivan Hotel in Paddington might be what they like)
Have been having a hard time finding their web site to get rates, photos, etc.
I tried google, etc. Can you help?
Also, what do you think of the Sullivan idea? Thanks!!

The Grand Hotel doesn't seem to have a website.

Their white pages entry (whitepages.com.au), inexplicably lists their website as www.merivale.com, but when you go there, the Grand doesn't appear as an option. Merivale have a couple of flash, trendy hotels, quite near the Grand, so perhaps it's there somewhere.

They also use a Merivale email address:
[email protected]

You could, of course, try the old fashioned methods:
phone: (612) 9232 3755
fax: (612) 9232 1073
mail: 30 Hunter Street, Sydney 2000

It's very close to the Menzies, which Michi has found quite convemient, but it's a fairly basic hotel.

Hi, again, Donnaduemmel!

Try this website for the Grand:
http://sydney.citysearch.com.au/E/V/...2/99/15/1.html.

Sullivan's Hotel is in Oxford St, Paddington, and that is certainly a colourful part of Sydney, but whether or not it's what your teenage girls would like I can't really say. Oxford St has lots of ethnic restaurants, some quaint litle shops, a few shopfronts where the business actually being transacted is not allowed to be advertised at the front, a prominent gay scene, and a reputation for after-dark rowdiness. I don't know, however, if Sullivan's is actually in the midst of this small area. The further away from the city you get, the more "domestic" and ordinary it becomes. Of course, the down side of that is, the further you have to travel to get into the main tourist areas.

Maybe some other posters will have some specific information about Sullivan's -- in the meantime, I hope this has been some small help.

Donna, as a Paddington local (and I'm writing this in my office all of 2 mins walk away from Sullivan's), allow me to "set you straight" about this establishment, rather than listen to hearsay !

OK, FYI, Oxford Street runs from Hyde Park in the CBD all the way through to Bondi Junction shopping centre (not to be confused with the famous Bondi Beach, more on that in a moment).

The "Gay Mile", as I've heard it described, although it's not an entirely accurate description, represents only a very small portion of the entire length of Oxford Street, and is centered/centred on the Taylor's Square area of the suburb of Darlinghurst, at the CBD end (this is where Sydney Gay Mardi Gras 'activities' are concentrated each February, as well as at the nearby Fox Studios complex).

Sullivan's, a small budget style hotel (who's best feature appears to be a lovely, sunny breakfast room at street level from my observation!) is actually located in Oxford Street adjacent to Greens Road in Paddington, where the Performing Arts campus of the University of NSW resides. Having seen countless hundreds of students going about their business around the campus and the nearby shopping precinct each day, I think I can safely say that your teenaged daughters will NOT have a problem with the general area !

Now, as I said, Oxford Street extends to Bondi Junction in the east, this is some distance from the actual Bondi Beach depending on your chosen mode of transport (e.g. bus is about 10-15 mins away, Junction to Beach). Sullivan's at Paddington is a further 10-15 mins bus ride away from the Junction (bus route 378 or 380).

If you were after 'close to the water' accommodation (and forgive me if I've got the wrong impression, I've only come into this thread late in the piece), then Paddington might not be exactly what you're after !

Hope this helps.

(p.s. Alan - regarding your comments "Oxford St has .... some quaint litle shops,... a few shopfronts where the business actually being transacted is not allowed to be advertised at the front, .... and a reputation for after-dark rowdiness" - with respect, and just highlighting those particular statements, that is not the general (Darlinghurst) area that I'VE observed over the last 28yrs or so ! There are one or two, ahem, "Adult shops" that cater to that particular 'lifestyle', (and let's just say that I for one wouldn't be going into the "Tool Shed" to buy a wrench or a spanner set!), but then these shops do have the appropriate warnings (as required by law) out front, so there really is not an issue.

And as to "after-dark rowdiness", well, there are 2 pubs on opposite sides of Taylor Square that are open 24hrs and a few nightclubs leading down to the Hyde Park end of Oxford Street that are open to the early hours of the morning, but I've not heard of any concerned residents groups being formed to combat the situation !

I agree with New Guy in every respect. Sullivans is in fact closer to trendy, classy Paddington than it is to Taylor Square that alan is referring to.

We walked past Sullivans twice yesterday - coming and going from a Rugby game. This was late afternoon and then about 10 pm - the traffic going past was horrendous and so were the relative exhaust fumes.
If you do decide to stay there I would strongly recommend making sure your rooms were at the back - or alternatively all invest in some good strong earplugs!

Donna

Margo mentioned the New Menzies where we stayed. It is rated 4 star and our room on arrival was very nice but found out later we had an upgrade. The second time around our room did not face the front (the Wynyard station) and was not as nice, but acceptable. They are on the web so check out the prices.

There are quite a few luxury hotels in the same area so I think that tells you something about the location. The New Menzies is not new but I believe has undergone some renovations but don't know when) and caters to tourists.

I agree your teens will like being close to the water. I'm 71 and I really enjoyed being close to so many things -- easy walking distance for the most part to harbour, bridge, all kinds of shopping/department, indoor malls in interesting building, stores and services to eat, laze and just experience Sydney.

I think your teens would be safe to wander on their own in that area until dark -- the local authors can speak to that -- which is probably important for them.

Take a 1/2 day tour to many interesting places in the city and surrounding areas. We took the APT tour that gave us an excellent overview.

Wherever you stay, have a good time.
