Certainly don't want to spend precious time in an airport and I think 12 hrs. would be time to see at least a few things....I'm going to look at a few web sites but do any of you have any must do suggestions?

Hello, jaspertl.
Assuming that this is your first trip to Sydney, I would suggest that you park your luggage at the airport, take the train (or a taxi) to the city centre, get tickets for the Bondi Explorer (this allows you to hop on and off as you want along a circuit through the suburbs to the south of the harbour), maybe have lunch at Doyles at Watsons Bay (on the Explorer route), have a walk around The Rocks once you get back on the Explorer and, time permitting, take the ferry over to Manley.

We were in Sydney recently and the taxi ride was only about 20 minutes and cost $30. Even walking around the Circular Quay, seeing the Opera House, having a nice lunch overlooking the harbor bridge would be a pleasant way to spend your time. Enjoy.

Go up Centre Point Tower for a wonderful view of the city and harbour- catch a ferry to Darling Harbour where the Sydney Wildlife Park is and the Aquarium - both well worth a visit. The train from the airport is easy although not cheap because the airport stations are a private company - I tnink you have to change at Central to get the train to Circular Quay to catch the ferries.

Catch the train to central, change there and catch train to Circular Quay (ferry terminal). Catch the Manly ferry across to Manly, lovely beach suburb. You'll get views of the whole harbour, takes 30 minutes one way, and when you get to Manly you can walk up the corso and enjoy the pacific ocean. Way cheaper than a harbour cruise. catch the Manly ferry back to Circular Quay and then you could catch another ferry to Darling Harbour, very nice too, ferry goes under the harbour bridge. Aquarium is excellent. You can do the bus tour around the city which is nice, but in my opinion the best part of Sydney is the harbour. Walking around to opera house from Circular Quay (10 mins) is lovely. Restaurants in that area are very expensive. Personally I'd have lunch at Manly (1/4 of the price!) Enjoy

Another idea.... for a truly iconic Sydney experience you could get a cab into Sydney and do the 'Bridge Climb' where you climb the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. I ahve completed this climb and it is fabulous. From start to end its around 3 and a half hours and you need to prebook. They also have an express climb that takes just over 2 hours. www.bridgeclimb.com . If you had time, you could then have fish at Doyles
Enjoy your day in Sydney!
