One of the more admirable English characteristics is the ability to take the piss out of themselves - we should all learn from their example.

Lee Ann, baseball is definitely played in Australia, so I'm sure we could field a team, but it doesn't have a high public profile. Australia being Australia, though, perhaps that would change if we thought we had a chance of winning.

As a matter of interest my expat daughters tell me that the World Cup is exciting huge interest in their city of Dalian, NE China. Especially at the local bar, where they catered for their Chinese, Korean and other supporters with Vegemite sandwiches and lamingtons ("I know, sounds lame, but they went down very well...")

Hey Neil, if your friends dished up that meal on the night Australia played what the hell do they do when Italy plays!!??

Neil_Oz Jun 15th, 2006 11:38 PM

I can only imagine, Peter - but I want to be there! If Australia gets to play Italy it will be even more interesting.

margo_oz Jun 17th, 2006 11:07 PM

All right for you - Neil - I live in an Italian area - if Oz play Italy - the place will erupt!

Australia won a silver medal in Baseball at the last olympic games. There are currently 60 odd Australians playing at various levels in the Major Leagues in the states. Just some fine facts for you folks ! ;)

Well what can I say !!
If ever there was a tem that deserved to win it was you Aussies !!

Brazil were made to look very average, if only Harry K had got that sitter in I think the result would have been in Aussie favour.

It's really difficult when your play ing against the world champions and a bent referee.

Good luck against Croatia, a draw will do it.

COME ON YOU AUSSIES !!!!!

:-O Mucky, the game's just about to start here. I stayed home with my son from church this morning since he's not feeling well, and he's watching soccer. Guess I'll be nice and not tell him the outcome... :-)

Perhaps as it hasn't happened yet, maybe Harry K will score this time.

Sorry about the soccer outcome for the aussies but at least Ogilvey (sp?) won the US Open golf tournament. I'm always happy when Phil loses but doubly happy when a cute Aussie wins. If it can't be Adam Scott then Ogilvey will do!

Meanwhile, two Australian universities have beaten off strong competition in Bremen by German, British and US teams to win a world championship in which robot dogs play a World-Cup style football match. No, I'm not sure what the significance of this is either, but it's nice to see a win in something other than a sporting contest.

I actually sat down and watched almost the whole match - what has Fodor's done to me??? :-))

Kewell = useless!

Wide open goal - and he still can't make it.

But at least he got off without suspension for telling the German referee he was a ratbag! (or something simuilar!)

The referee, on teh other hand, is now being investigated.....

Well it's been great so far. Now I am going to ask all contributors to this post - what was the best football game you ever saw in person?

Please note football = soccer.

And where was it?

Cardiff City against QPR play off Final 2004 at the Millenium stadium Cardiff. When Cardiff scored the winner in extra time, the stadium roof blew off.

W&M upsetting power house Maryland a couple of years ago. A local Williamsburg boy was the goalie for Maryland so there were huge crowds (for Williamsburg) and some very divided loyalties.

Best game I saw live was in 1988 when I was living in Reading, Berkshire.

It was the Simod cup final at Wembley Reading vs Luton. We won 4-1. Fantastic game.

Great to see Reading in the premiership next year.

Neil_Oz Jun 21st, 2006 03:39 PM

To the best of my recollection I've seen only one football game in person -had to accompany a Rugby-loving customer to the corporate box. Don't remember who was playing (the Canberra Raiders vs. somebody, I suppose) but the snacks were nice.

Football, Neil....FOOT-ball.

Neil_Oz Jun 21st, 2006 09:59 PM

eschaton, I still think we should stand firm against European cultural imperialism. It's soccer.
