Winter Coat in Sydney?

Seeking Outerwear Advice - Will an unlined trench coat be warm enough for an August night at the opera in Sydney?

Alan Aug 5th, 2005 01:14 AM

Unless you happen to strike one of our windy August days -- and these are coming later every year -- you may not need a coat at all. It's surprising how warm it has been in Sydney all this year -- certainly don't pack a heavy coat just for this one occurrence; you'll probably be fine, unless you are coming from somewhere which never sees winter at all.

I travel with a combination of a polartec jacket and a goretex raincoat. The polartec doubles as a pillow when necessary and never wrinkles. The goretex folds up in its own pocket and is quite compact. Some combination covers any weather situation.

Having said that, we attended the symphony at the opera house in June. There is no dress code and no one will pay much attention to what you have on.

thanks!

Hi crosscheck. I agree with Alan . I have had an overcoat with removable lining hanging in my wardrobe for years and never worn it! August can be windy but I think you will be ok without it. Cheers!

You would like to have one today, very chilly southerly front coming through. Melbourne had snow in the outer suburbs this morning.

More than anything else pack a sturdy folding umbrella in case of Sydney rain , which can thump down and drench you especially as you have to walk a distance from doors across the forecourt to shelter / taxis .

And in Canberra ... it won't surprise many regular posters to hear that yesterday, while giving the dog an abbreviated walk, I was rained on, then hailed on, then snowed on. Enough, already, I get the message.

Wow it is serioulsy cold today brrrrrr. I have a little $15 heater we picked up last year and it was fine until it actually got cold!! I can't move from in front of it though!

It will warm up by Saturday they say.

You're not coming this weekend, are you, Crosscheck? If so, please ignore the advice I gava above and bring a coat.... better still, bring ALL your coats. Snow on the Mountains.... five degrees Celsius expected overnight tonight in Sydney.... this is making us pay for the fact that we got through virtually the whole winter without a single terrible day!

Hopefully, by Sunday, everything will be back to normal again.... but I couldn't help feeling, as I huddled over my heater early this afternoon, that I may have "jinxed" you with that advice I gave just a few sunny days ago!

Wow is my face red!? Yesterday was freezing and snow fell in lots of places. Still didn't wear my overcoat but easily could have. Supposed to be warming up considerably over the next few days. We'll have to leave it up to you now crosscheck. Cheers!

How quickly it changes - I've just spent two hours lying in the sun with short sleeves. What a glorious Sunday.
