Will shops be open in Sydney on Dec. 26?

I am finalizing some details of our trip and would like to know if most shops in the Rocks, George street and that part of town will be open on Dec. 26.

Thanks.

Not sure what you mean by "that part of town" - could all be down to a missing comma! But anyway ... If you are totally focussed on Lower George St down by the the harbour - then I'm not 100% sure. But they'd be daft if they weren't as the shops just up the road (literally) will be open in a big way. For DJs and Grace Bros (sorry Myers) - ie the two big department stores - it will be the first day of the Sales.

Happy shopping -
but curious to know - would you change your plans if the shops were all closed!

Cheers.

Hi Maxi
Not sure what will be open in the Rocksbut everything else will be closed as Xmas Day is actually being observed on the 26th (Boxing Day) as the 25th is on the Sunday. I've copied the details from the govt website below.

2005/06 Christmas/New Year trading hours

The Minister for Industrial Relations has announced that he will be introducing into the Parliament in November 2005 a Bill relating to 2005/06 Christmas/New Year trading hours.

This means that:

Sunday 25 December 2005 (additional Public Holiday)
All general shops in NSW to remain closed.
Monday 26 December 2005 (Christmas Day Public Holiday)
All general shops in NSW to remain closed except for those located in areas which are designated section 89B tourist areas which are staffed by voluntary labour.

Tuesday 27 December 2005 (Boxing Day Public Holiday)
Normal trading for all general shops in NSW. (Prohibition will be lifted).
Sunday 1 January 2006 (New Years Day – not a Public Holiday)
All general shops to remain closed except for those within the Sydney CBD, Newcastle City, Cabramatta, Wollongong City (78A exemption) and designated tourist areas (section 89B) which are staffed by voluntary labour.
Monday, 2 January (New Years Day Public Holiday)
Normal trading day for all general shops in NSW (Prohibition will be lifted) .
Small and scheduled shops can trade unrestricted over the Christmas New Year Period.

Sorry Fuzzy
I waswriting when you posted, I wasn't meaningto contradict you. I think what is happening is that the sales will start on the 27th as that is officially Boxing ay as everything has been pushed out. The govt is making the 25th an extra holiday.

Thanks for the information. Knowing that most shops (if not all) will be closed on Dec. 26, I will try to schedule other activities for that day and leave the shopping to Dec. 27.

Thanks again.
