Hi Shirley,
We just got back from that area and loved it. Airlie Beach is full of backpackers (mainly European), and loads of places offering day tours. We flew in there and picked up a great standby deal to South Molle Island - about half of the normal price. There are signs all over the place offering good deals to the islands (that was mid June). The ferries run to all the islands, you can book a proper tour including lunch etc or just get on a ferry and decide what you want to do when you get there.
I think Toscana is right in town, on the hill looking over the bay. There are about 4 hotels/apartments all in a a row up the hill, about 5 min walk into town. There's not a great deal in Airlie itself but the new lagoon area on the waterfront is lovely, good for picnics and swimming.
South Molle was great - included 3 meals a day, all non-motorised watersports, golf, tennis, bushwalking, etc. Had a beachfront room for A$125 each. Be aware with the water sports, you could only use cats, jetskis etc in the morning because afternoon was low tide and it was considered dangerous.
Hope you have a wonderful time, as we did.
Kay
