Which months for traveling to Australia based on our destinations?

My husband and I are planning a two to two and half week trip to Australia. We will be concentrating on the eastern and middle portions. Our tentative plan is to start in Sydney, then through Queensland up to the Cairns, over to Uluru, and back down to Sydney. The months we are considering are either October, November, or March. For the areas we are planning to visit, which of the three months would be best weather wise?

For me, either October or March; I am in Sydney and you get some beautiful weather in Sydney in March. Sunny days, mid 20s, cool nights so you get a good night's sleep. That would be my pick. Maybe someone else can contribute about the other destinations.

If you pick a shoulder season, you can avoid the worst of the wet in Far North Queensland and maybe some of the extreme heat at Uluru. I agree that March should be a good time, maybe later rather than earlier. I'm just not sure how bad the build-up would be in FNQ in October?

October is before the build up for the wet in FNQ, good month as is after the winter south easterlies, or it should be. Wind can really disrupt a reef trip, especially if you're prone to seasickness. November around Cairns/Port Douglas, getting warmer and more humid but usually great reef conditions, Feb/March here are the wettest months of year.

Our trip to Melbourne, Ayers Rock/Uluru, Cairns, and Sydney was in the beginning of April this year 2011, and the weather was great. We has showers on the Great Ocean Road trip, but that would be from Melbourne, and a few over cast days in Sydney but no rain. Over all, the weather was great and not too hot in Uluru (27c).
