Which do you prefer - North or South Island
 

What island do you prefer -- North or South, and why?

I prefer the S Island because I like the rugged topography - tall mountain ranges, deep valleys, long fjords, big lakes, rushing rivers, coastal cliffs, and low-elevation glaciers. Generally, the S Island is not as crowded, and it is easier to get away from everyone just by hiking a bit.

Sure do like those N Island volcanoes, though!

Loved the South Island but haven't had a chance to tour the north isl. Looking forward to seeing it on our next visit. And, of course, we'll go back to the South Island and just take more time while in NZ.

South Island is just about everything you could imagine it to be.

I preferred the South Island as well. The scenery is spectacular and there are heaps of adventure activites too good to pass up. I went skiing and heliskiing, hanggliding, ice climbing at Franz Josef, etc. The North Island was beautiful but more serene and quiet. Spend more time on the South Island but don't miss Wellington in the North-great, funky little city. The Bay of Plenty also had good scenery but was quiet.

Yes the South Island is wonderful but don't let anyone tell you the north Island has nothing to offer. We did 7 weeks devided about evenly between and I could have spent more time both places. I have an 8 page trip report if you are interested. Email me at [email protected] Wendy

Being a born and bred Kiwi that has travelled both islands alot I think that the south island has much more to offer than the north, but also dont think the north should be missed as it is quite different. Why not pick the best places of both and do both>>?
