Where to stay near Melbourne
 

Hi all, i will be visiting Melbourne in March end. Am planning to stay in the cbd for 5-6 days and would also like to stay in a nice place for 3 days on the outskirts of Melbourne. Somewhere scenic and with enough things to entertain my 4 year old. Anything in Yarra valley or other places u can recommend for a couple of days stay? Thanks a lot for your advice !

One idea would be to stay out near Healesville and visit the Healesville Sanctuary which has all Australian native animals (like a zoo). Belgrave is not far away and has Puffing Billy, a steam train that small children usually love. It's been running for years and is popular. Healesville has some nice cafes and shops and the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie is not far, near Yarra Glen, it is worth a visit.

Check Stayz or Trip Advisor for accommodation. You will need a car, public transport outside the centre of the city leaves a lot to be desired.

If it's still hot in March (or if it ever finally gets hot around here this year), the little ones love running through the fountains at the Seville Waterpark in the Yarra Valley. Bonus, it's free.

Alternative plan might be Sorrento at the tip of Mornington Peninsula. Nice dramatic beaches on one side of the spit, facing Bass Straight and calm, peaceful beaches with lots of shells and starfish on the bay side. Great walks up at Point Nepean (where we've spotted echidnas) and a ferry runs from Sorrento to Queenscliffe for a nice day trip to the fort there. I believe there's a maze somewhere on Mornington too. Plenty of restaurants still going at that time of year.


Agree, you can't really do a lot by public transport past Lilydale or so.

Still have'nt been able to find a nice accomodation near yarra valley / healesville . Anyone has any tried and tested recommendations? Serviced apt / cottage would be nice ..anything outside of cbd really where we will be staying for 6 days. Thanks

This site has a range of accomodation. Many of the B&Bs and cottages in this region are upmarket and quite pricey.
