Im planning a trip to Australia and my first destination will be in Sydney. Can anyone suggest where a best place to stay in ? Hostels especially ?

Thanks in advance

Hi phro,
You will likely get better information about Sydney hostels on Lonely Planet's Thorntree forums:

Good luck!

I'm pretty sure someone, maybe Alan, once recommended a hostel near Central Railway Station. If you search on hostel +sydney on this site you may find that thread. Alternatively, go to www.hihostels.com.

Yep - the YHA hostel near Central Railway is said to be pretty good. A visitor of mine from Sweden stayed there and found it quite convenient and central (for the price!)

Thank you everyone for your responses. I will definitely check out the ones you've suggested.

One more thing... a friend of mine suggested for me to stay close or in Darlinghurst/Kings Cross area 'cause they are close to all the clubs... Would that be a good idea ? Also, how safe is it ?
I've been doing my research and they say to be really cautious in that area especially at night. Since Im doing this trip solo, the last thing I want to do is get in a fight with some idiot that tries to mug me.

Can you give me some sort of a comparison ?

Thanks again in advance

Base Wanderers on Kent St. Well set up.

Darlinghurst/kings cross has a lot of night life - some good and a fair bit pretty rough. prostitution certainly spills out on the street day time and night, and occassionally very drugged up. Some of the hostels there are pretty ropey as well - one a couple of years ago was fell victim to an arsonist with fatalities - partly as fire doors were locked to stop potential burglars coming in. I would suggest staying elsewhere and go there one evening to check it out.

If you like sleeze then the Cross might be for you - there are certainly loads of hostels there but they tend to be of the scruffy, cheap and cheerful kind. Sydney Central YHA, on the other hand, is a bit impersonal for a backpackers - but is super clean and well run. They even have single/double rooms (at a price) if that's what you want. I have stayed there, and it was fine, and the location is handy close to long distance bus departures, and train station, and about 20-25 walk from Circular Quay. Also close to Chinatown and lots of cheap eateries.

There is also a newer place called Wake Up just round the corner that gets good reviews.

Check out www.yha.org.au, or
bugaustralia.com.au for independent (non YHA) hostels.

If you don't need to be so close to town and don't mind taking a bus/ferry you can also stay cheaply in a pub on the west side of Darling Harbour, or on the North Shore in Kirribilli (just over the bridge).

Try SydneyBeachHostels.com

You can stay in Manly right next to the ocean pretty cheap and take a 15 minute ferry to the city. It's beautiful over there with lots of activities, pubs and dining. Check out www.sharkbar.com.au

Volleyball, surfing, you name it...

Stayed at the McCleay Serviced Apartments in April and then again in May. it was nice, they have a Website. Its it Potts Point trendy secection near Kings Cross . Had a good time and it was safe!

Kings Cross can be a little seedy, but the backpacker crowd enjoys it. I stayed at Eva's Hostel...it was clean, secure and has a big Lonely Planet following. After a night at the clubs, be very careful on your way home.

The area around Central Station has loads of hostels (I'd recommend YHA...and Footprints is pretty good too). You will quickly meet other hostel-goers who are also wanting to experience the club scene.

I'm staying at the YWCA in Sydney. They don't discriminate and they have hostel facilities.

Hi phro1,
Had quik glance of posts here - not sure of your budget. Stayed in Sydney Central on Wenworth - was budget but near most places - 20 min walk to William St. 10 to Central station & Chinatown - lots of cheaper (=<$10) eats in area. Clean enough too.

Vibe is in same blk as above - but more upmkt.

Can chk rates & info on ratestogo.
