Where to stay in Huon Valley Tasmania
I am going to a wedding which is being held at Home Hill Winery and was wondering where would be a nice place to stay which was not too far away. If making suggestions, please give reasons for your choices so that I have an idea where you are coming from
Thanks in advance |
Hi Mary,
We loved our stay in the Huon Valley at Camellia Cottage. This ‘find’ was the most delightful self-contained 125 year old cottage with open wood fireplace, on a property at Maple Hill, overlooking Castle Forbes Bay, a small apple orchard and rolling hills. There was a resident cockatoo, dogs, goats and chooks, and beautiful private gardens with ponds, little bridges and seating dotted all over the property to enjoy the breath-taking views and spectacular gardens. All this, plus full breakfast including fresh-baked bread and eggs from the property’s chooks, for AU$100 per couple. You can check out the pics at: http://www.takeabreak.com.au/CastleF...ia-Cottage.htm Have a great wedding! Jackie |
Thank you FurryTiles, that sounds lovely. Is it very far from the winery because I cannot get the google map to work over the whole area showing both places?

Hi again Mary,
See that the winery is in Ranelagh – so if you google ‘accommodation Ranelagh Tasmania’ you’ll get quite a few hits. If you then use Multimap www.multimap.com , you can check the distance and get driving directions for all your possible options, as well as a detailed map. Camelia Cottage is about 24 kms south of Ranelagh, about a 20 min. drive along the Huon River. Guess it all depends on whether you’re planning a longer stay in the area than just the wedding – as some of the boutique/B&B accommodations do have a minimum 2 night stay – and what your budget is. You could also try searching this forum; there have been many Tasmania trip reports and lodging queries in the past, which may help you. Cheers, Jackie |
Whilst you're in that lovely area, Mary, do make sure you have a meal at Petty Sessions on the riverside at Franklin.
Still remember a wonderful meal I had there last year, abalone, a rich venison pie and a totally sinful chocolate and berry tower. |
Oh boy! this sounds really good. I think there will be quite a few of us now wanting accommodation for the wedding which is in the Spring, late September, so I thank everyone in advance for their tips in that regard. Chocolate and berry tower, yummmmmm!

Just a thought, Mary - if there are quite a few needing accommodation for the wedding, maybe a bigger house/cottage together could be an option? I often use stayz.com to get lodging ideas for family reunions.
Check out http://www.stayz.com.au/accommodatio...ia/huon-valley Chocolate 'n berry tower - even the thought is fattening, Pat! But so lush. |
Good suggestions but think my first choice would be Matilda's at Ranelagh as it is very close. Its 4 and half star and the rooms are lovely. Also very quiet. Have been there many times but not since the new owners took over. Looks and sounds the same on the website though at

Matilda's of Ranelagh has changed significantly since the new owners took over, some things for the better and some not so. Perhaps looking on Wotif would be a really good option.
