where to find good, cheap sushi in Sydney

We will be in Sydney in November for 5 nights as part of a 2 week trip to Australia. We enjoy eating in Japanese restaurants when travelling. Is there a part of Sydney that has Japanesee restaurants and shops? We especially like conveyor belt sushi. Inexpensive, casual places where the locals and ex pats go are usually the best.

No Japanese area to my knowledge. Cowra, quite a way from Sydney sells some Japanese items at it's Japanese gardens.

Sushi is available at many places as take away. Japanese restaurants are spread around, would depend on where you are staying.

Susiesan,
Some sensational Japanese restaurants in Sydney.

For sushi - sushi e (Level 4, Establishment Hotel, 262 George St.) www.merivale.com
(15/20 in 2006 SMH Good Food guide.)

There's also a sushi train in the GPO building in Martin Place (downstairs) which gets a good crowd.

Castlecrag (just north of the Harbour) is a popular spot for Japanese residents, but as far as I know there isn't an "encleve" per se.

This link might be useful http://www.japaneselifestyle.com.au/...ant_sydney.php

The CBD, inner suburbs all have a good selection of Japanese restaurants. There's also a good one in the Rocks, can't remember the name - something like Syke - and also Yoshi (haven't been there so can't recommend).

We are staying at the Marriott Sydney Harbour. We will not have a car-will be using busses and trains.

You may try Makoto Sushi Bar. They always pack of people.
Their price is reasonable, has a wide range of choices of sushi and easy to go.
Here is their address: Holden Arcade Shop
Shop 1, 385-401 Pitt St
Sydney NSW 2000
Phone (02) 9283 6767
Fax (02) 9283 6775

Or if you have time, you may try to go to www.eatability.com.au. Lot of sydney restaurant reviews there.

Sushi-e is also very good but a bit expensive.

Catch a train fr Wynyard to Chatswood. On Mon, Tues, Wed evenings (fr 5 pm)sushi is reduced to $2.70 on the conveyor belt. The address is Makoto, 336 Victoria Ave, Chatswood (nr Archer St) Tel: 9411 1838. Cool place & authentic Jap chefs.

I think they are linked to what chickenrice said

There are a lot of places with the sushi belt. I went to one on Oxford Street that is great-can't remember the name but it's a cute Japanese place I found in Lonely Planet (look in Paddington). So, if you are walking and shopping along Oxford Street somewhere in the vicinity of William Street check it out. There is a Sushi Train in North Bondi right across the street from the beach. But really, I found them all over the place.

There's a sushi train right near the train station on King Street, in Newtown, which is about fifteen minutes from the CBD, and a fun, funky hipster shopping street to explore. Try not to go during a torrential downpour as we did!

Strange enough I was at the one in Paddington only yesterday!

It was $2.50 per plate.

Started with an O but cannot remember the name. Was just before William St though comimg from the west.

The kaiten sushi bar in GPO is called Sosumi. We eat here everytime we are in Sydney. Its great food - but not cheap food. Last visit lunch for 2 cost us A$66.

My favourite sushi train spot is in the Greater Union cinema complex in George St in the city. Masuya's is a cheap Japanese restaurant which serves great food. Even the Japanese tourists eat here! It's in O'Connell St.
