when to go?

Starting to plan our families first trip to Australia. When is the best time of the year to go on a cheaper budget? What are the 5 "must see" things. We want to scuba dive the barrier reef and snorkel. We will have a 4 and 6 year old with us. Thanks from Pittsburgh.

For an American it is cheap all year! Our $ is worth only half of yours and therefore you can afford the best at all times ion comparison.
The best time to come is out of school holiday season and preferably in the Spring or Autumn, although the GBR in our winter is great.
The 5 must see things???????
The area around the GBR
The Islands of the GBR
Sydney and surrounds

Try to avoid school holidays as accommodation is usually dearer during this time, particularly during the main summer holidays (late December to early February).
You haven't mentioned how long you will have in Australia so it is difficult to really give advice. There's lots to see in Sydney; the coast between Port Douglas and Townsville offers great beaches and good scenery; the beach areas north and south of Brisbane are worth visiting.
