when to book accomodation and activities?

Hi all,
We will be in Australia, NZ, and Fiji from December 26-January 22. We have booked our plane tickets... when should we book accomodation and activities (Sydney bridgeclimb, NZ glacier heli-hike, Milford Sound overnight cruise...)? We won't need accomodation in Australia but will in the South Island of NZ from Jan 6-14 and in Fiji from 14-22. I don't know if the school holidays will still be on? Any ideas on when would be a good time to book?
Thanks in advance.
Liz

Liz -

The following site lists the NZ school holidays in 2006:

http://www.transit.govt.nz/road_info...n/holidays.jsp

We visited NZ during school holidays this past April/May and we saw alot of "no vacancy" signs, especially in Queenstown and Franz Josef. We'd booked accommodation well in advance so we had no problems.

I can't really help with when you should book, but if it were me, I'd definitely book ahead of time, especially in busy areas with popular activities (helihike, overnight cruise, etc).

Have a good trip!

FYI:
For others traveling in the Dec-Jan high season...
I emailed Punga Grove Motel in Franz Josef to book today for January 7-9, and they only had 2 luxury suites left! (We took one and are on the waiting list for the regular room.)

You should book the heli-hike as soon as you are reasonably sure you will do it. You can cancel it 24 hrs in advance. <b>http://www.explorefranzjosef.com/booking.asp</b>

Ditto for accommodations for Fox and Franz Josef areas. There will always be some rooms, but most likely not the ones you want in those areas. Check out their cancellation policies.

For other areas in south NZ, there are always some good rooms, as you can see by checking <b>wotif.com</b>. Of course, if you have any special places you want to stay, you should make them ASAP. ((R))

Thank you, Jed (and Melnq8!)
I just reserved our heli-hike...I hope we have good weather!
If anyone else is looking at Punga Grove, they do have a 48-hour cancellation policy.
