What would NZ be like in May?
 

I've read enought to know that this certainly isn't peak season. But, what is fall like in NZ? We'd probably be mostly interested in the south island and would plan lots of primarily outdoor activities. My husband would like to trout fish. I've thought about renting a small camper van. Thanks.

Fall is an excellent time to visit New Zealand. Though early Fall might be best in terms of slightly warmer temps (especially if you are going to be doing a lot of fishing), still plan on bringing layers and a good jacket for wind/rain and possibly even some snow if you are up in the mountains trekking.

New Zealand can actually be quite cold in May so I advise bringing lots of warm clothes with you, especially if you want to do outdoor activities. It is much warmer in the North Island than the South Island but the South is simply stunning so should not be missed.

Is the weather so crummy that you'd advise against a visit at this time of year? Unfortunately becuse of my job we have certin limiattions on when we can take vacations.

We went in mid-to-late April 2004, and the weather was fine; warm enough during the day, mostly sunny, cool at night. I wouldn't hesitate to go in May. Just pack layers, some rain gear, and you'll be fine.

The weather in NZ is unpredictible year round. Personally, I prefer the off season and have visited the SI in April, May, August and September - and I'd definitely visit during those months again.

We just returned from two weeks on the SI - the first time we've visited during the high season - and probably the last - although the weather was warm (almost too warm), it felt busy (a relative term in the case of NZ, but that's how it felt to us).

The advantages of visiting in the shoulder season are lower rates and fewer people.

I would never advise anyone against visiting NZ regardless of the time of year!

As Lee Ann mentioned, plan to dress in layers, pack a fleece and waterproof jacket and go have yourself a grand old time.

I'm currently in the South Island, Queenstown to be exact. My friends here keep warning me that the weather is very unpredictable and it can get quite cold. My first trip was in early December, which was NZ's Summer. It was warm and gorgeous. I've been here 3 weeks now and can tell you that the weather has been mostly nice - beautiful, clear days ... sometimes warm enough for just a tshirt, and the nights have gotten down into the 40s (Farenheit) at some point. We did the Routeburn Track with Ultimate Hikes last week, and I can highly recommend it and the company if you're into tramping. You might also want to check out Backstage Pass New Zealand if you're interested in a personal guide service. They seem to know most everyone in the area and can put you onto some of the area's best activity options - fishing, bungee jumping, jet boating, tramping, wine tasting, etc. But back to the weather ... I think the best suggestion is to be prepared for all types of weather. It seems that you can pick up most anything you need locally; however, outdoor gear can be a bit pricey here so if you have favorites, I'd suggest bringing those. Have a great trip!

The South will be fine in May. The South Island is a great place to travel in all seasons, and is generally a little drier in winter - certainly drier than the North Island.

julies, just remember that the old English word "fall" isn't used outside North America. In this neck of the woods it's "autumn".

I meant to say that I haven't been to NZ in May but would have no hesitation in going. I don't mind nippy weather.
