Wellington

we will be in Wellington on New Year's Day. Does anyone know if the shops will be open?

Going on past experience the answer is no. You should find enough cafes and restaurants open but that's about it.

I was also wondering the same thing as we will be there off a cruise ship. We are thinking about hiring a driver.

i would like to suggest that if the ferry is operating- you take it across the bay and hike into the pretty parkland just up form the ferry dock. you might even see penguins in the bay (as i did)...
what sort of shopping are you antcipating in wellington? there's not that much to buy there- how about seeing if te papa is open- that museum is amazing and will take up your entire day.

I'm thinking that many shops will be open on New Year's Day. They are only closed on Christmas Day, Good Friday and ANZAC morning.
