weather in newzealand
 

hi all, i am planning for a trip to newzealand this coming late april till early may. what would the weather be like is it very cold over there. i would be going to Mt Cook too, will it be snowing there or do i get to see any snow and also what to wear over there? thanzx all!!!

I suggest you be prepared for any type of weather, especially around Mt Cook and at higher elevations. I've never seen Mt Cook WITHOUT snow, but we usually travel in September, when it can be a bit nippy. We always take a fleece jacket and a waterproof jacket that we can wear alone or layer over the fleece.

Agreed that layering offers flexibility!

i have been watching the weather too. it seems rainy on the west coast - south island. will the sky clear up by mid april?

If you are hoping for dry weather on the West Coast of the South Island you may be hoping in vain. The West Coast is famous for its rain. After all a lot of people go there to see the rain forests and the waterfalls.

By the way you can measure the rainfall in metres on the West Coast as oppossed to centimetres.

You get used to it though. Just make sure you have a rancoat handy for any outdoor activities.

In that case, are there any special precautions that we should keep in mind?

Melnq8 mention that had never seen Mt Cook without snow but is it possible for us to not only see it but touch it too at that season i am going??

There are helicopters in the Mt. Cook/West Coast region that offer "snow landings" in the Southern Alps. Take a look at the site below for more info:
