Weather in June vs. December?
 

I studied abroad in Adelaide back in 1997 (OK that makes me feel old). And I have yet to go back, I have been dying to though!

I'm curious about the weather in Adelaide in June? I work in a school, so the only times I could go to Australia would be my summer, or over Christmas break.

Is it super hot the two weeks around Christmas? I'm thinking it would be hotter in Sydney because it's more north than Adelaide? And maybe this is true for June also.

I definitely want to spend a decent amount of time in Adelaide, reliving old times. Definitely want to drive the great ocean road, since I never got to, to Melbourne, and definitely want to visit Sydney. I'm not sure about the Gold Coast (weather in June vs. Dec?)

I can't remember what it was like. I first came to Sydney in July and then on to Adelaide five days later. I kind of remember rain and maybe 50s (f). In my pics I have a spring jacket on. And then I left around December 15th, and I remember it being hot, but maybe not TOO hot. Although I seem to be a bigger baby these days when it comes to heat.

As people feel things differently have a look at the climate data at http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/ and make up your own mind.

June is winter and will be cool to cold most likely under 20 C each day. Winter is also the wet season in Adelaide.

December is summer and therefore, likely warm to hot and dryer. Usually January and February are hotter and occasionally March. December daytime temps will likely be between high 20s and low 30s C.

I would much prefer December over June for weather although hotel availability should be better in June as it is winter.

Australian school holidays start around mid Dec or just before Christmas and go through to the end of January. In winter, they tend to be in July rather than June.

The Great Ocean Road will be a few degrees cooler than Adelaide, being further south.

If you want to come in late December, you will need to book early being the Christmas/summer/school holiday season.

Loved reading your memories, but as you have obviously realised they can be fickle!

The weather in Sydney around Christmas can be quite hot - say 30C - but it could be less and it could be more. The weather here right now isn't miserable - most days are sunny but it's not tshirt weather, and at night it's been quite cold. I think 6C is quite cold, but then you may not!! It's colder in ADL and MLB.

My gut feeling is come in December. I wouldn't want to be driving the GOR in late June or July. You could get lucky but ..

But book accommo well in advance.

What about driving the GOR in early or middle June? Sigh. I really want to come in June because we could come for three weeks then. Two weeks in December will feel cheated to me.

Ah well, if it can only be 3 weeks if you go in June that adds a big extra factor! Three weeks is so much better than two.

I guess the weather in the cities isn't so critical - the main thing is, it's not really going to be eating outside weather after dark (patio heaters notwithstanding). And on the GOR - all anyone can say for sure is that it won't be particularly warm. It might not rain but it could be grey.

Yeah, I really don't want to spend so much for plane tickets and only go for two weeks, but I only have a two week break at Christmas.

We survived June in Scotland last year, which is supposed to be their summer. The rain and temps were probably worse than what these sites are showing the averages for Australia! I know it won't be ideal though. Maybe we can go again in the future during another season.
