Watch surf at Teahupoo, Tahiti?

Need your help, Fodorites.
Just read a story about Laird Hamilton surfing at Teahupoo, Tahiti, and I would love to see the place for myself. (I'm not a surfer, but love to watch big surf -- from a safe distance! -- with or without surfers riding the waves.)

We'll be in Tahiti briefly in November, before and after a Windstar FP cruise. I've checked the map, and Teahupoo is the other side of the island from Papeete. Presumably, you'd have to drive there. Has anyone done this? Is this a realistic plan?

TIA, as always, for any information, suggestions, reports.

When I was there (quite a few years ago) you could take the Circle Island Bus, rent a scooter or rent a car. The Paul Gauguin museum is on that side of the island also.

Thanks Peggy, that helps.

Anyone else done that recently? Does the bus still run? any idea how much time to allow for the trip?

We rep a pension that is very close Teahupoo. The waves there are not for the faint of heart, but it's fantastic surfing. Matter of fact, it's getting used for the Billabong Pro in May.

It takes about an hour and a half to get out there from Papeete, without any stops. An economy car runs about $20-25, so to me it's totally worth it to rent the car and spend the day doing what I want, rather than trapped on bus.
