Want to find buildings to look at.

We are planning a trip to Australia in October and our interests are looking at old houses and buildings. Can anyone suggest some for us. Most likely we will be going to Sydney and Cairnes...but we are open to suggestions. Thanks for your help.

try vaucluse house in sydney, also the rocks is full of old places you can walk in and out of. old in australia is 200yrs and under, so most of what you'll find is either really new or victorian, state & capitol theatres are nice.

Joyce,
As stated on the earlier post on this subject the web address for the National Trust is www.nationaltrust.com.au - I am sure you will find details of many interesting buildings from this site.
There are many in Sydney and suburbs.

Joyce,
If you are in Sydney, go for a day or two to the hunter valley up near Newcastle (2 hour drive north of Sydney). It is an historic region so plenty of old interesting buildings.

David

I know that you want to see old buildings, but if you are interested in architecture in general may I recommend visiting Canberra (~3-4hr drive s of Sydney)and going to Parliament House. Stunning building unlike any other around. Canberra as the capital has a lot to see, National Art Gallery, Law Courts, Governor Generals' residence etc as well as being the home of dozens of Embassies (US one is beautiful) There may be tours of these. If you are there in the first two weeks the annual floral festival 'floriade' is beautiful.

If in Sydney and you have time to go to the Blue Mountains, go a bit further and make the effort to get to Sofala. An old gold mining town with querky little buildings and tiny little streets. With a little imagination easy to imagine what it must have been like 150 years ago.
