Walking tours Melbourne
 

Hi,
I will be in Melbourne got two weeks in March. Can anybody recommend interesting, fun, informative and even unusual walking tours in the city? Also, must see/shouldn't miss destinations/ attractions.

We have a public holiday on Monday 14 March (Labour Day). The Moomba festival is held over this long weekend and there will be all sorts of festivities and concerts, including a parade in the CBD on Monday. The main tourist office is in Federation Square, opposite Flinders Street railway station and they can give you lots of information.
We have some good museums and art galleries. The Ian Potter Gallery (part of the National Gallery of Victoria) has a good selection of Australian art with the National Gallery just across the road.

The Queen Victoria market is well worth visiting for great food and things to take home. There is also a night market one night a week with live music etc.

We love doing guided walks and have done them all over the world. In Melbourne, the Council for Adult Education offer historical walks, culinary walks and lots of others. I think you may need to book ahead but check the website -

If you like strolling and exploring, some area that would be good are -
- along the river near Southbank and the casino, down towards Docklands
- through the Botanical, Fitzroy or Treasury Gardens
- along Lygon Street - wall to wall restaurants so go when you are hungry!
- tram to St Kilda then walk along the beach or Acland Street

There is the Melbourne Golden Mile walk which is reportedly very good.

I think there are also some ghost tours of the city; Old Melbourne Gaol and occasionally the cemetery.

There is a chocolate tour of the city and a tour of the lanes/alleyways that have now become quite trendy.

St Kilda Pier at dusk has penguin tours.

I haven't done any of these as I lived in Melbourne for 20 odd years and didn't feel the need to be a tourist.

The Eureka Skydeck give a good view of the city and bay and has a glass box to stand in that slides out so you are standing in mid air.

Puffing billy is a lovely train ride through the forest. It also offers trips at meal times that are catered well.

Melbourne is such an place to visit.

The tourist office in Federation Square has brochures for several self-guided walking tours. We did a few of them and they were great! If the office is out of brochures they can photocopy one for you.
