Visas

Hi - We're coming to Australia in November. I see we need visas. How do we get them, where do we get them and how much do they cost? Thank you in advance.
Sandy

I got them from the airlines when I purchased my ticket to Australia. You just need your passport number. It's all done electronically & it's free as far as I know.

If you buy your tickets online, then just call the airline after the transaction is complete.

Hi Christina - Thanks for that quick answer. So you're saying I just have to call Quantas and it will be taken care of. That sounds great.

Qantas takes care of it all with one very short phone call. You need to have your passport in front of you when you call because they need the number off it. It probably takes less than 5 min. to do. You also need to have purchased your tickets.

Hi - I called Quantas and they do NOT do that for you. You have to electronically apply for it on the internet. I'm glad I found out how to do it.

I went to Australia a year ago (I was a brave soul). Qantas did my visa for me just like the other lady said. They might have changed their policy/procedures. I'm going again in December and did mine online ... paid $10 but it was worth it.

Thanks Sandi - I guess they changed the procedure after last 9/11.

If you're from the US, please get the correct visa before you leave home. I had an incompetent travel agent who gave me a form that she swore was an Aus. Visa form. I completed it and upon checkin with British Air in London, bound for Aus, was told that no way was that form a visa and that I'd have to get a real one from their cashier booth as they'd be in trouble for allowing me to arrive in Aus without the correct one. The cost was 25 Br. Pounds, about $39 US. And we should feel sorry for travel agents?

Sandy:
Here's the deal. Go to www.Qantas.com.
Then click on Visas. Tells you what you have to do and who does it. What you need is a ETA, an Electronic Travel Authority which is issued by Quantas.
Have a nice trip.
By the way, call your credit card company and tell them your travel plans so they don't freeze your card when you try to use it overseas.
John

Thanks John - I already took care of it. It's real easy to do. Thanks again.
