visa needed for australia

Imagine my surprise when I was printing my boarding pass the day I was to leave for Sydney and United calmly informed me I need a visa. A few hours of hysteria later I was able to obtain one. Do not do this to yourself.

I'm surprised anyone would not check Visa requirements before they booked flights to a foreign country.

I'm wondering the same thing, Bokhara2. Fortunately I assume the OP was not SOL and could obtain an electronic ESTA; may not be so lucky if going somewhere else.

I too am surprised one would assume they didn't need one, but perhaps youngtom is a young inexperienced traveler?

I good lesson regardless, never assume, check.

I got caught by this too, and am neither young nor inexperienced. Australia was near the end of a ten month RTW, and I had thought I didn't need a visa on a UK passport. Wrong, but fixable at the check-in desk.

When I made my cruise ship reservation the company informed us that we would need visas to get into Australia and I got those on-line. We were fortunate to be able to use one of those kiosks when we arrived in-country although my attempt failed and I was directed to an actual person.
