United Airlines' first direct flight from San Francisco to Christchurch landed in NZ this morning, offering a new option for US travelers (especially United MileagePlus members) who'd prefer to skip a connection in Auckland and begin their journey on the South Island..

In my opinion, Christchurch International Airport is an easier, more compact airport to deal with than Auckland International Airport.

When I saw your photo of your United flight from Auckland to SFO at the end of your trip report, I thought of how much you would have preferred this direct flight from Christchurch to SFO. Christchurch Airport is far less sprawling and not as busy.
