Hello travel guru's,

We are planning a trip in January or February of 2008 and we are wide open to suggestions. Some info.

We are 27, Canadian, have no kids and no budget

We are looking for a unique place anywhere in the world that has:
tropical weather
great beaches
interesting culture (edgey is ok)
somewhere a little off the beaten track
adventure activities
plenty of fun

we have loved:
Mal Pais Costa Rica
Rio de Janeiro and Ila Bella Brazil
kerela and goa india
on previous vacations at this time of year.

Where should we go?

Having just returned from South America and in particular Rio, I am at a loss to suggest anything as I thought that Rio, was the most underwhelming place I have seen on this planet, apart from the fact that it has the highest murder rate second only to Badgdad Iraq, in the World. I have also only been to Costa Rica vout of the rest of your destinations but can only assume that you are looking for somewhere rather 3rd World, dodgy in its safety and short on modern conveniences. If I am correct then perhaps I could suggest Zamboanga in the Philippines or anywhere along the Ivory Coast in Africa - and yes I have been to those places. If I am incorrect and this is not what you are looking for then give us more information on yourselves.

Hi,
What do you mean by "culture" - current culture (music, food, etc) or past culture (history, architecture) - or social customs spanning both?

What to you is plenty of fun? - do you mean clubs, wet tee shirt competitions?

You might consider Belize or Guatemala but you might not find all your must haves in the same location.

Many places I can think of fit four out of six but I think once you demand adventure activities and plenty of fun you must rule out "off the beaten track" (though my definition of that may be different from yours).

More info required.

Hey Chimani,
by culture i mean current culture and by fun i mean vibrant definitely not looking for a wet t shirt contest and adventure activities would definitely be the lowest priority. Also, we have no problem mixing up the locations. I look forward to your suggestions!

Thanks, Jared

Jared,

I guess anywhere with an Islamic culture would be out of the frame then?

I mean, I can think of some wondeful places but you might have to make your own fun in the evening by just going out to eat and meeting people.

No discos; no "scene". You could still get a drink but places where you could would not be in your face.

Thinking Lamu, Zanzibar, Malaysia, Sabah.

Or if you are into the resort thing I guess there is the Maldives (never been) or there's Mauritius (ditto) or the Cooks.

Or you could always come to Australia - very edgy up there in FNQ.
