I am an Indian citizen and was refused an Australia transit visa as I did not share a New Zealand visa in my application

My travel plan was to transit in Sydney for 2 days on my return from New Zealand back to India.

I provided proof of my onward flights from Sydney to India & Sydney hotel booking.

But, the visa was refused as I did not share a New Zealand visa.

Is that correct? Could it be that they misunderstood that I am departing Sydney for New Zealand?

I have not yet applied for a New Zealand visa as the NZ application would require me to show an Australia transit visa as proof of my onward journey.

If you’re only passing through Sydney on your way back to India and not heading to New Zealand from Australia, you generally wouldn’t need a New Zealand visa for that.
