Train Stations in Auckland

We're thinking of taking a train found on THE GREAT JOURNEYS OF NEW ZEALAND going from Auckland to Wellington. Has anyone has ever done this trip? (Sorry for the incorrect title -- couldnt edit it.)

Sorry, not the whole thing. Just the commuter leg between Wellington and Paraparaumu (if you haven't looked at Kapiti Island, that's a great day trip and even better overnight, btw).

If you're a train buff it sounds interesting. Maybe you could stay over to visit Tongariro NP.

Thanks! We had planned to fly to Wellington after spending a week with a friend on the N.island. Then we will ferry over to the South island for the rest of our time in NZ. So not planning on any stopovers on the N.Island at this point. They do look appealing for sure. I like a good train ride every now and then, though certainly not a train buff. It's a long trip by train so we'll need to think more about it.

Passing along this link to this article by the Man in Seat 61, who is a renowned and highly respected train travel expert:

When are you traveling? Because I would think the Northern Explorer would be most scenic when the weather is fine.

We would do the train in the beginning of February so I would hope for good weather.

The weather should be great at that time, though occasionally ex-cyclones can blow in from the South Pacific, creating quite a wet mess.
