Toxic Insecticide

I have heard that all flights landing in new Zealand are sprayed with an insecticide before passengers are allowed to deplane. Can anyone confirm this?
Also I hear that the type used is very toxic.
Does anyone know of ways to avoid this, perhaps using masks or arriving by boat?
Not true Chris. No one gets sprayed.

They don't get sprayed but some of the visitors/or returnees "should" be sprayed.

This used to be common practice way back in the 70s but they no longer spray the cabins.
Just make sure you dont bring any fruit, cheese or honey with you and disinfect your shoes. If you are caught with any of the above and you haven't declared it you will face a hefty fine.

Hi!

Just got back from a 3 week trip to Oz -our cabin was sprayed when we landed in Sydney!!!!

Karen, they obviously heard that you hadn't freshened your deodorant before landing. Now that was naughty wasn't it.
Not just in the 70's - it was done more recently than that as well. From several of the islands, they spryayed directly in the cabin. NZ and OZ eventually stopped someone from coming around with spray cans but didn't stop the practice. They started to circulate the insecticide through the airplane's air system.

I do not know that this is still going on or not, but I do know that at least at one point they switched so that you just weren't aware this was happening.
