Tongariro National Park

We will arrive by ferry from the SI in early March for 10 days in the NI. Tongariro NP looks beautiful and we'd like to experience it. Any recommendations for hikes other than the Tongariro Crossing? And what town is best to stay in for convenience of reaching the park?
We are a couple in our early 60's in good shape, though we live at sea level and it's hard to train for altitude.
We'd welcome other suggestions beyond the park for ways to experience the North Island.
Thanks.

We spent the night at the Skotel in Whakapapa Village; we planned to do the Crossing, but weren't adequately prepared for wet weather. Instead, we did the Taranaki Falls walk. It took us roughly two hours and it was lovely.

Here's a link to shorter walks in the park:

Keep in mind it's been almost 10 years since we were there, so I won't comment on lodging, but the walk shouldn't have changed much, if at all.

I also stayed at Skotel, but this was way more than 10 years ago. Didn't even consider doing the crossing because the mountain was covered with snow.
Skotel had basic accommodations, but the setting was nice.

Tongaririo Crossing is great but there is so much more t this park than the Crossing. For example, From Whakapapa (right beside the Skotel) Tama Lakes Track, five to six hours return, goes out on the Taranaki Falls Track and beyond, so you can 'kill two bird with one stone'!. Check with the lovely people in the Visitor Centre at Whakapapa re weather and current conditions.

Thank you for your replies. The Tongariro Crossing looks great, but crowded from what I read. Your alternate suggestions are appreciated.
