Three day guided tour of Fraser Island from Hervey Bay, comments?
I am planning to take the three day guided tour to Fraser Island from Hervey Bay. It is offered by a company called "The Fraser Island Company". Any one been on this tour? Comments would be appreciated.

3 Days! I would rather be on Hinchinbrook Island for 3 days. Yes I do like Fraser Island BUT it really is not somewhere you go to do a tour for 3 days on - 1 day perhaps I cannot remember what time of year you are coming either. If its in the school holidays Fraser Island is swarming with fishermen and their families doing what the island is great for and that is driving up and down the sand dunes and fishing.

Well, I'm not sure that I would agree wtih ivenotbeeneverywhere Z!
It actually sounds quite a nice relaxing tour - with plenty of spare time - 3 days on Fraser Island sounds like heaven to me! |
I have just done the day trip to Fraser Island and loved it. I can see why 3 days would be excellent-you would have more time at beautiful places eg lake Mckenzie (my idea of heaven) and see a great deal of the island. it also helps you recover from the bumping around that you will do on the rutted roads. All the companies that I saw offered similar deals and prices. So go for it!!!

Last time I was there I spent a week and did not see or do all I wanted to.
From the ocean beaches, to the sand dunes (please stay off the semi vegetated ones as people destabilize them further), to the lakes to the forests of different types, to the mangroves there is a huge range of scenery and wildlife. |
I also disagree with ivenotbeeneverywhere. We spent 4 nights there and it wasnt enough. It is a huge island with a lot of natural attractions.

Thank you for your comments.

Hi Z,
I'm sure you'll enjoy your tour; I think 3-4 days is the right amount of time for Fraser; as RalphR says, it's a big island to explore. I'vebeeneverywhere - just FYI, I was checking on Hinchinbrook for a client a couple of weeks ago,(this would have been his 2nd trip) and found out that it's closed down until March 2010. Hope this is helpful! Regards, Melodie Certified Aussie Specialist |
Melodie, what is closed down? Surely they would not close down trips to the island so I am guessing that you mean that the accommodation section is closed down. I guess they are going to make it bigger and better or at least more profitable. Thanks for the information. I still have not found out when the OP was going to Fraser Island. The comments from my friends from Atlanta who went on a tour of Fraser were....... it was boring! The weather was not good and there was nothing else for them to do.

I can see why Fraser Island isn't for everybody, especially when the weather is bad. Like a lot of destinations in Australia (including Hinchinbrook Island certainly) it's for hikers, nature lovers, and adventure-seekers, mainly. There is practically nothing as far as shops, bars, restaurants and other amusements - what exists is limited only to the Kingfisher resort and a few places on the ocean side of the island. People who find Fraser boring would likely be better off sticking to the cities or to tourist traps like Surfers Paradise, Hamilton Island, maybe Port Douglas.

Abbe here. I love Australia. I will be on sunshine coast in January on business. I want to snorkel the fantastic reefs and see non tourist Australia. I am worried about rain on GBReef. Where would you suggest? I have a week around Jan 20
