Things to do in the South Island?
 

I am going to be in New Zealand this Xmas with my brother (after spending about 18 days in Australia). We will be spending 5 days on the North Island culminating in a wedding in wellington. We have six days to go tour the South Island after that?<BR><BR>Any suggestions would be much appreciated.<BR><BR>Aidan<BR>

Depends on what you like to do...there is beautiful scenery...<BR>there is always bungee jumping or jet boating...wineries, great restaurants...you name it.<BR>I would say that whatever you like, you will find something. Have a wonderful trip. You'll love NZ

Lots to see and do in the South Island.<BR>Just touring around the countryside and visiting small towns. Christchurch, Dunedin, Queenstown, Milford Sound. Adventure activities are in Queenstown, including bungee jumping, jet boating, hang gliding, tandem jumping, kayaking, hiking, everything is available there. Take a bus tour and they will take you everywhere and tell you what you are seeing. Rent a car and stop at any of the awesome scenic spots. Cafe's in everytown with good food. Lots of B & B's and hotels. Information centers will give you all the ifo you need including finding a place to stay.

Hi Aidan - you can definitely rent cars in Picton and drop in Christchurch...I know both Avis & Budget allow with no penalty, and probably others, too. Or you could take the train (tranz scenic) between the two cities(but I guess that gives you less flexibilty to stop along the way). We are traveling there shortly, and it sounds like driving is fairly easy, and allows the most flexibility. <BR><BR>Have a wonderful time!

Aidan,<BR>The two previous posters have covered the adventure capital of the world, but if you are into the scenic side of New Zealand I would like to give you a few hints. Let me know. <BR>Unfortunately our public transport is not great and so you will need the rental car. As Dawn has said you definitely can hire one way rentals.<BR>One bit of advice, as Xmas is the main holiday season for kiwis, make sure you pre-book your accommodations.<BR>Have a great trip.
