The Otway Ranges
I receieved a suggestion to get out of the city and explore more, and this was one of the suggestions. Wondering where to stay and how long. I was thinking Apollo Bay and staying for a couple of days. I was also thinking of renting a car in Melbourne and driving myself. Is this a good idea or no?

We explored the Otway Ranges (and most of the GOR) by basing ourselves in Marengo, 2 km west of Apollo Bay. We stayed here, lovely cottages:
http://www.colonialcottages.com.au/ We spent three nights, taking day trips, to prevent having to unpack and repack - worked for us. I have a trip report from that visit posted here, the GOR section is at the top: http://www.fodors.com/community/aust...t-wild-tas.cfm |
Thanks Melnq8, your trip report was helpful. Did you find that getting in a car after flying so long was too much sitting or wasn't it too bad?? I was thinking since I am coming from the US, that maybe a couple of days in Melbourne to get used to the time change and then head to the GOR and the Otway Ranges.

Resting up for a day or two after a long international flight is always a good idea, especially if you're not familiar with driving on the left.

There is plenty to see and do in the Otways and GOR.
The Otway Fly is a tree top walk through the Mountain Ash forest. Melba Gully has glow worms on the side of the track. The walk needs to be done at night but is a very easy and clearly marked track. Look for the rare Otway black snail on walking tracks. The coast is fantastic. The Otway Lighthouse is worth a look but do not go out of you way unless you have the time and the inclination. It has great views and a good tour. |
