Taupo Accomodation

We will be touring Rotorua and Taupo/Tongariro for three days. Is it advisable to stay in Taupo for all 3 nights, or near Rotorua one night and Taupo the other two?

Can anyone recommend a good place to stay in Taupo (moderately priced motel or B&B)?

Thanks!

Rotorua and Taupo are only about 30 miles from each other; unless you plan a really long day in Rotorua, I wouldn't change locations.

Thanks LeeAnn; I think we've settled that we're definitely staying 3 nights in Taupo. Any recs on a good place?

Has anyone stayed at the Alpine Motor Lodge or Cascades Motor Lodge & provide any insight?

Sorry, no; we stayed at the Lake Plaza in Rotorua one night, and the next night at the Skotel in Tongariro National Park.

There's really not much to do in Taupo. I stayed one night at a B&B, only because I played golf there. I'd reconsider 3 nights.

mlgb - one day we'll be driving to Rotorua from Auckland to see the thermal areas & wai-o-tapu. Days 2-3 are for the Tongariro Crossing (we figured 2 days in case of bad weather). The other day will be relaxing & enjoying the area. Taupo does look very touristy but it seems this is the best place to settle for this leg of the trip.

There are great hot mineral baths at DeBrett's campground--and they have very nice chalets and cabins if you're okay with non ensuite.

Oooh yes--they are good, possibly though on the downside of great despite current additions to hotel. Lovely staff and clean, clean, clean. The hot springs are great for a day--dragon slide much recommended. Cafe was out of service during our stay.
