Tahaa and Vahine Island

I'm heading to Vahine Island in a couple of weeks. If anyone has been there, please advise as to like/dislikes...What we should do while there, how the food was, and the ins and outs of the island. Also, any photos you may be able to share of the island (above what is @ Vahines web site).

Thanks,

Matt

If you are firmly booked at Vahine relax. Getting married is enough of a strain and the rates at Vahine are not high for French Polynesia. However I may not give you much help. We visited Tahaa for an afternoon from Bora Bora a large number of years ago perhaps in 1968. Vahine Island was not developed yet. You can easily get to Tahaa from Vahini but there is not much over there but nature and I imagine that it has not changed much recently. There was one store that sold items to locals which had some stuff for tourists. Also there was a school there and we saw the children. We walked down a dirt road which was pleasant and I don't remember anything else. Vahine is very-very small and water acticities, room activities, eating/drinking and enjoying nature or each other is about all you can expect there. Also, if you have ran a search on Vahine and it has not changed much, expect to see a high percentage of French speaking people there. Long ago when we went to Manihi we ran into almost nobody that spoke any English. It may not be much different in Vahine. Depending on both of your attitudes, that may not be all bad. Many American have a hard time with the French culture. If you are simpatico you will be ok. As for as food goes, you might expect a lot of fresh fish. Anything else has to come from elsewhere. We have never had a bad meal in French Polynesia although on Manihi we did get a little tired of having fish every night for dinner. Again this may not be the case in Vahine since it is so close to Bora Bora. There was a few hundred miles more to go to get to Manihi. I think you will be able to exlore the in and outs of the island in less than an hour, however we have not been there. I think you will have nice sand beaches but I am not certain that you will find good snorkeling reefs nearby. At this time I am certain that you can easily go over to visit Bora Bora. However, for a visitor you can get a feel of the place in one day. Except for resorts and small settlements you are in areas that are close to nature. I will put it bluntly, if you need to be entertained, have a hard time being without people that have common language and culture, and are not happy being along with nature without radio, TV and modern noises you are going to the wrong place.

We just came back home (to France) after spending three weeks in Polynesia. After being severely disappointed with a particular chain hotel in Morea (Beachcomber/Park Royal) we flipped through one of our books and stumbled upon Vahine Island and managed to book a room for one week. It's not flashy but rather very understated and very enjoyable. The couple who run the island are very friendly (Mary Laura and Gerard) and they previously owned a restaurant in the SW of France, which is known for its great food.

If you like cookie cutter hotels, lots of people and tacky events, don't go to Vahine Island. If you like peace and quiet, great food and pleasant people, you will love it. We met other couples from Europe, US, Mexico and South America and with one exception, everyone loved the place. The exception was a young couple that was seeking a more upbeat pace.

While you are there, you can sail, canoe, snorkel, visit Tahaa and just relax. If you are looking for more, stick to another island. If you like a laid back pace, also look into Huahine or Rangiroa.

Try looking at www.cadvision.com/vahine for more details or send us a mail and we can answer more questions.
