Sydney Zoo

I've been reading a lot about the zoo. Is it worth a visit? Are there night time hours?

Nice ferry ride over. As for the zoo, they do have australian animals, but also have a lot of your standard zoo animals that you can see anywhere. Don`t know about night time hours. I thnk there is a wildlife sanctuary near Sydney, that has more of the australian variety of creatures, if that is what you are looking for.

The zoo is a nice stop on the Sidney Habour Tour. It's set on the side of a hill so you take the cable car or a bus up and walk down. The the zoo has good exhibits on Australian animals,e.g. nocturnal animals ,kangaroos , koalas platypus. so you can learn a lot. We were there when they feed the koalas at their Walkabout exhibit. The zoo keeper explained what makes these creatures so unique while they were so amusing going after their gum leaves.

There were also the full range of creatures from elsewhere in nice outdoor exhibits since the Sidney climate is so nice. We had to leave at 5 or 6 PM when the zoo was closing the day we were there .I don't know if there are any evenings when it's open.

Hi, Randi!
I think the evening openings at the Zoo are confined to the warmer months, so if you are coming mid-year, you'll have to do it by day. But if it's a bright, sunny day, yes, it is worth a visit.... you may see zoos with greater variety of exhibits, but you will be lucky to find one where they can be photographed against a better backdrop: the zoo is constructed on one of the prime harbour sites in Sydney. And it's a pleasant ferry ride over, too!

It's a must! I've been going probably every 2nd year since I was little and now take my own kids. Each and every time, I marvel at the fact that the animals have a better view than most Sydneysiders!!!

Randi

Having been to both Melbourne and Sydney zoos I'd go to Melbourne's zoo if I had the choice. Maybe you won't be visiting Melbourne but if so I'd save my zoo visiting till then. It's a far nicer zoo in my opinion - the position isn't as scenic but the zoo itself is outstanding.

I've been to the zoo in London and Singapore as well and would rate Melbourne Zoo as the best by far!

Rhonda is right, if you are wanting to see a zoo then leave it for when you are in Melbourne as there is little else for you to do in Melbourne and sights to see.
