sydney markets

Which are best as all seem to be at weekend and will not have much time-interesting quirky as opposed to touristy?? also any quirky shops!
Staying in Newtown where I hope to find lots of them.

Closest to where you are staying in Newtown are Glebe Markets, which are quirky rather than touristy. They are in Glebe Point Road directly opposite one of the best independent bookstores in Sydney--Gleebooks.

Also in the inner west there's Rozelle Markets which is more of a flea market with mainly second hand stuff--good fossiking market. It's on Darling St, not far from the junction with Victoria Rd.

Further down Darling st is Balmain market which has clothes, jewellery, candles, soaps, etc (it's a fairly small market, but more frou-frou rather than quirky).

The one I visit most regularly, Orange Grove (Lilyfield) is mainly a food market but does have a mixture of other things (discounted cookbooks, beanies from South America, straw bags, beads, Coonawarra lavender products).

In the eastern suburbs there is Paddington market in Oxford St as well as Bondi Markets.

There is also a market in Surry Hills (first Saturday of the month).

There is also the "Good Living" markets in front of the casino on the first Saturday of every month. They are focused on food and have vendors from all over the state with some interesting coffees, cakes, breads, cheeses, preserves and lots of fruit & veggies.

By 11.00am they are starting to close down.

Not sure what happened to my prev post however, as i stated earlier, in addition to Susan7's reply.

This site is an excellent story about the fish markets.

Are there any markets that are open during the week?

Susan7 Apr 24th, 2008 03:28 PM

I think the food market at the Showground is open on Wednesday. There's also a small market at Sydney University every second Wednesday.

Thanks Susan!

You could do Orange Grove, Rozelle, and Balmain all on the same Saturday if you wanted to. And get a good meal at one of the local Balmain/eateries, and travel one way by bus and one way by ferry. A great day out!

There are also markets once a month in Manly, Mosman, and North Sydney, but all on Saturday, unfortunately.

My fave is Rozelle.

I like Paddington best, it's only on Saturdays. I think the rule that the stall has to be manned by the artisan still applies. It's also where some local designers first sold their stuff.
